Abstract Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone derived from the pineal gland that has wide range of clinical application. While melatonin was originally assessed as a hormone specializing in regulation of the normal circadian rhythm in mammals, it now has been shown to be an effective free radical scavenger and antioxidant.
