Association between human herpes simplex virus and periodontitis: results from the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2014
CONCLUSIONS: HSV-1 infection was significantly associated with periodontitis and severe periodontitis, while HSV-2 infection was associated with severe periodontitis, and periodontitis in 40-50-year-olds and Mexican-Americans.PMID:37723536 | PMC:PMC10507957 | DOI:10.1186/s12903-023-03416-x

Segmental Zoster Paresis Accompanied by Horner's Syndrome
Intern Med. 2023;62(18):2743-2746. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.0578-22. Epub 2023 Sep 15.ABSTRACTWe herein report a 90-year-old immunocompromised woman who developed right upper limb weakness and right ptosis with a miotic pupil 1 week after oral therapy for zoster on the right T2 dermatome. The right pupil was dilated with instillation of 1% apraclonidine, indicating Horner's syndrome. The patient was treated with intravenous acyclovir and methylprednisolone. Focal weakness related to zoster, generally known as segmental zoster paresis, improved over five months, but Horner's syndrome remained. We suggest that aggressiv...

The relevance of clinical and epidemiological correlation in the early diagnosis of histoplasmosis: report of two clinical cases in Popay án, Colombia
Biomedica. 2023 Aug 31;43(Sp. 1):20-31. doi: 10.7705/biomedica.6782.ABSTRACTHistoplasmosis is an endemic mycosis in Colombia. Here we present two cases in the Cauca department, to indicate the clinical impact of histoplasmosis delayed diagnosis and treatment when its epidemiology is unknown. Informed consent was requested to review patients’ medical records and case report publication. The first case was a patient diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus and generalized presence of skin lesions. Initially, these lesions were diagnosed as herpes, but a postmortem diagnosis confirmed histoplasmosis through fungal cultur...

Physiological Activities of the King of Bitters (Andrographis paniculata): A Review
Cureus. 2023 Aug 15;15(8):e43515. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43515. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTAndrographis paniculata is a versatile tropical plant that is considered to have many essential medicinal properties. Plants can combine an open scope of the natural active compound that carries out significant organic roles and are used as pharmaceuticals. Herbal plants have therapeutic and prophylactic properties, so scientists are concentrating on developing crude drugs to make people's lives easier. Medicinal plants are the primary sources of therapeutic remedies for various ailments. These potential medicinal effects are primaril...

Clinical and Epidemiological Profile of Herpes Zoster and Its Complications in a Tertiary Care Center of Bihar: A Prospective Study
Conclusion A broader understanding of the clinical and epidemiological factors of herpes zoster and post-herpetic complications is important as this disease constitutes a considerable burden in a tertiary care center and if not treated adequately, the after-effects might last for many years altogether. Hence, early diagnosis and initiation of adequate antiviral therapy as well as pain management is the key aspect of management.PMID:37719532 | PMC:PMC10503883 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.43560

Bacillus Calmette-Gu érin vaccination for protection against recurrent herpes labialis: a nested randomised controlled trial
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Sep 11;64:102203. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102203. eCollection 2023 Oct.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Recurrences of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the orofacial region (herpes labialis or cold sores) impact quality-of-life. We aimed to study whether the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine can attenuate cold sore recurrences through off-target immunomodulatory effects.METHODS: In this nested randomised controlled trial within the multicentre, phase 3 BRACE trial, 6828 healthcare workers were randomised in 36 sites in Australia, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Brazil, to receive BCG-Denmark ...

Detection of varicella-zoster virus in two dermatomes of herpes zoster duplex bilateralis in an immunocompetent host
J Dermatol. 2023 Sep 17. doi: 10.1111/1346-8138.16963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn 85-year-old woman with no history of herpes zoster (HZ) presented with a primary lesion of erythema and blistering on her left thigh and a secondary similar lesion on her right chest which had appeared at 4 and 3 days before presentation, respectively. Tzanck smears for both lesions were positive, revealing multinucleated giant cells. Immunochromatography to detect varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antigen (DermaQuick®VZV) showed positive on the left thigh at initial onset but negative on the right chest at subsequent onset. The latter repe...

A booster administration of the OKA/SK strain causes fatal disseminated varicella  in an immunocompetent child
We report the first fatal case of VZV infection caused by OKA/SK strain contained in the vaccine administrated as a booster shot in an immunocompetent child, which has been independently developed from any currently available varicella vaccines that are OKA strain or MAV/06 strain based. The patient died due to sudden pulmonary alveolar hemorrhage as a secondary complication of VZV pneumonitis. Sequencing of the four SNPs unique to the OKA/SK strain (SNP loci 14 035T; 32 626C; 58 777G; 70 319G) enabled discrimination of the strain responsible for the disseminated infection. OKA/SK strain does not have any SNPs in ORF62 pos...

Intimate partner violence is associated with cytomegalovirus among young women in rural South Africa: An HPTN 068 analysis
Glob Public Health. 2023 Jan;18(1):2258962. doi: 10.1080/17441692.2023.2258962.ABSTRACTABSTRACTStressful life circumstances (e.g. violence and poverty) have been associated with elevated biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1), among older adults in high-income settings. Yet, it remains unknown whether these relationships exist among younger populations in resource-limited settings. We therefore utilised a cohort of 1,279 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) from the HIV Prevention Trials Network 068 study in rural South Africa to examine the associa...
