Patient-reported reactogenicity and safety of COVID-19 vaccinations vs. comparator vaccinations: a comparative observational cohort study
CONCLUSION: The rate of adverse reactions after established vaccinations was roughly comparable to previous studies. Two weeks after vaccination, participants in the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination group reported more local and systemic local reactions than participants in the comparator group. In the further course, however, there were no higher odds of medical consultations in either of the two groups. Thus, altogether, we assume comparable safety.TRIAL REGISTRATION: DRKS-ID DRKS00025881 and DRKS-ID DRKS00025373.PMID:37726711 | DOI:10.1186/s12916-023-03064-6

Neuro-ophthalmic complications of varicella-zoster virus
Curr Opin Ophthalmol. 2023 Aug 22. doi: 10.1097/ICU.0000000000000996. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review broadly describes recent neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reported in literature.RECENT FINDINGS: Despite varicella vaccination, the incidence of herpes zoster continues to rise, potentially leading to devastating consequences when ocular complications occur.A small but growing literature documents cases of retinal disease because of varicella reactivation after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, ischemic optic neuropathy occurring during herpes zoster ophthalmicus, VZV-indu...

Necrotizing pancreatitis, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia following the second dose of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine
We report a 31-year-old female with a history of borderline personality disorder, intravenous drug abuse, allergic asthma, eating disorder, psoriatic arthritis treated with tofacitinib, neurogenic bladder disturbance, cholecystectomy, recurrent thoracic herpes zoster, vaginal candida infections and urinary tract infections, who developed pancreatitis associated with thrombotic microangiopathy and hemolytic-uremic syndrome 10 days after the second vaccination, whereas the first has been well tolerated. She was treated by plasma exchange, and eventually by transgastric drainage with implantation of a plastic stent to remove ...

Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Shingles with an Immunostimulatory Vaccine Virus and Acyclovir
Pharmaceuticals (Basel). 2023 Feb 1;16(2):226. doi: 10.3390/ph16020226.ABSTRACTPractically the entire global population is infected by herpesviruses that establish lifelong latency and can be reactivated. Alpha-herpesviruses, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1/HSV-2) and varicella zoster virus (VZV), establish latency in sensory neurons and then reactivate to infect epithelial cells in the mucosa or skin, resulting in a vesicular rash. Licensed antivirals inhibit virus replication, but do not affect latency. On reactivation, VZV causes herpes zoster, also known as shingles. The 76-year-old first author of this paper pub...

Clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related acute appendicitis
CONCLUSION: With the exception of older age, the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with acute appendicitis within 21 days of receiving the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination did not differ from those of patients who presented with acute appendicitis not related to the vaccination. This finding suggests that vaccine-related acute appendicitis is similar to "classic" acute appendicitis.PMID:37225246 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.009322
