Assessment of Disease Burden and Immunization Rates for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in People Living with HIV: The Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: The burden of vaccine-preventable diseases was quite high in HIV-infected patients. Nadir CD4 T-cell counts, peak HIV viral loads, and the number of ART regimen change are significant factors related to vaccination. Considering the low vaccination rates for VPDs, there was a discordance between experts' opinions and real clinical practice in the medical field.PMID:37674339 | DOI:10.3947/ic.2023.0045

Impact of methotrexate treatment on vaccines immunogenicity in adult rheumatological patients - Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Aug 3;165:115254. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115254. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the development of new biological and synthetic targeted therapies, methotrexate remains one of the most commonly used immunomodulatory drugs in rheumatology. However, its effect on the immunogenicity of vaccines has been studied only to a limited extent until recently, resulting in the lack of clear guidelines on the use of methotrexate during vaccination. Significant progress was made during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the dynamic development of research on vaccines, including patients with autoimmune inf...

Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Shingles with an Immunostimulatory Vaccine Virus and Acyclovir
Pharmaceuticals (Basel). 2023 Feb 1;16(2):226. doi: 10.3390/ph16020226.ABSTRACTPractically the entire global population is infected by herpesviruses that establish lifelong latency and can be reactivated. Alpha-herpesviruses, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1/HSV-2) and varicella zoster virus (VZV), establish latency in sensory neurons and then reactivate to infect epithelial cells in the mucosa or skin, resulting in a vesicular rash. Licensed antivirals inhibit virus replication, but do not affect latency. On reactivation, VZV causes herpes zoster, also known as shingles. The 76-year-old first author of this paper pub...

Licensed liposomal vaccines and adjuvants in the antigen delivery system
BioTechnologia (Pozn). 2022 Dec 24;103(4):409-423. doi: 10.5114/bta.2022.120709. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTLiposomes (LSs) are promising nanoparticles with unique properties such as controlled nanosize, large surface area, increased reactivity, and ability to undergo modification. Worldwide, licensed liposomal forms of antibiotics, hormones, antioxidants, cytostatics, ophthalmic drugs, etc., are available on the pharmaceutical market. This review focuses on the adjuvant properties of LSs in the production of vaccines (VACs). LS-VACs have the following advantages: antigens with low immunogenicity can become highly immunogeni...

Adult Vaccination
Am Fam Physician. 2022 Nov;106(5):534-542.ABSTRACTAdult vaccination rates are low in the United States, despite clear benefits for reducing morbidity and mortality. Vaccine science is evolving rapidly, and family physicians must maintain familiarity with the most recent guidelines. The recommended adult immunization schedule is updated annually by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All eligible patients should receive SARS-CoV-2 vaccines according to the current guidelines. Adults without contraindications should also receive an annual influenza vaccine. Hepa...

An Orally Administered Nonpathogenic Attenuated Vaccine Virus Can Be Used to Control SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Complementary Plan B to COVID-19 Vaccination
Conclusions SIT has already been demonstrated to be safe and effective against five different families of viruses, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, SARS-CoV-2, and herpes zoster virus. The R903/78 drug candidate is simple to manufacture and easy to administer in an outpatient setting. The expected cost of SIT will be affordable even in resource-limited countries.PMID:36176842 | PMC:PMC9511982 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.28467

Recurrence of Herpetic Keratitis after COVID-19 Vaccination: A Report of Two Cases
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 vaccines work by generating both adaptive humoral and cellular immune responses in humans, including elevation of anti-spike neutralizing antibody titers, antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses, and increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as interferon gamma (IFNγ). The general activation of the T-cell-mediated immune response and proinflammatory cytokines such as IFNγ may underlie the role of the COVID vaccines in reactivation of herpetic stromal keratitis and the clinical findings in our reported cases.PMID:35601874 | PMC:PMC9121224 | DOI:10.1155/2022/7094893
