HIV infection does not influence stroke outcomes in HIV-infected patients: A prospective study.
CONCLUSION: HIV infection does not affect in-hospital mortality and functional outcome in stroke patients a part the length of hospital stay. PMID: 30948261 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Epidemiology of stroke and transient ischemic attacks: Current knowledge and perspectives.
Authors: Béjot Y, Daubail B, Giroud M Abstract Because of the growing size and aging of the world's population, the global burden of stroke is increasing dramatically. Current epidemiological data indicate that 16.9million people suffer a stroke each year, which represents a global incidence of 258/100,000/year, with marked differences between high- and low-income countries, and an age-adjusted incidence 1.5 times higher in men than in women. Although primary prevention has contributed to a decrease in stroke incidence in high-income countries, the so-called 'epidemiological transition' has led to an increase in i...

Association of obesity with recurrent stroke and cardiovascular events.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that obesity is a significant risk factor for recurrent stroke, although obesity was not associated significantly with myocardial infarction and death after 5-years of first stroke. Further clinical goal-directed weight reduction outcome trials in this area will be critical to validate the most effective approaches and, ultimately, to guide policy is certainly needed. Urinary tract infection after acute stroke: Impact of indwelling urinary catheterization and assessment of catheter-use practices in French stroke centers.
CONCLUSION: Urinary catheterization is common after acute stroke and a well-known risk factor of UTI. However, as high heterogeneity in catheter-use practices is found among French SCs, randomized studies comparing the efficacy of urinary catheterization techniques in terms of UTI prevention in acute stroke patients are now warranted. Reprint of : Transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale to prevent stroke recurrence in patients with otherwise unexplained ischaemic stroke: Expert consensus of the French Neurovascular Society and the French Society of Cardiology.
CONCLUSIONS: Although a big step forward that will benefit many patients has been taken with recent trials, many questions remain unanswered. Pending results from further studies, decision-making regarding management of patients with PFO-associated ischaemic stroke should be based on a close coordination between neurologists/stroke specialists and cardiologists. Stroke symptoms impact on mental and physical health: A Lebanese population based study.
CONCLUSION: Physical and mental health functioning declined among symptomatic individuals and those with stroke/TIA history. Thus, frequent monitoring for the early detection of stroke symptoms may be recommended. PMID: 32653213 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Regional disparities in acute and post-acute care of stroke patients in France, 2015.
CONCLUSION: This study focused on hospital-based management of stroke patients. In spite of the creation of new SUs over the past decade in France, there are persistent regional differences in the number of SU beds/100,000 inhabitants and, consequently, in the rate of stroke patients managed in SUs. However, rates continue to improve with the creation of new SUs and the expansion of existing ones. Regional variations were also noted for post-acute hospitalization rates and PARH beds/places. Air pollution and humidity as triggering factors for stroke. Results of a 12-year analysis in the West Paris area.
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that short-term exposure to air pollution and a high level of humidity are associated with a significant excess relative risk of calls for suspected stroke. PMID: 31030900 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Use of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores to predict prognosis after stroke.
CONCLUSION: CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were both associated with stroke outcomes regardless of atrial fibrillation. These scores can be useful tools for the prognosis stratification of a patient with an ischemic stroke. PMID: 31262518 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Specificities of acute phase stroke management in the elderly.
Authors: Smadja D, Salmon PK Abstract Health professionals are currently facing the challenge of managing an increasing number of old patients presenting with acute stroke, due to rapid aging of the population. Compared to their younger counterparts, elderly patients differ in many ways in the setting of acute stroke. Apart from a striking high stroke incidence, which increases exponentially as age increases, cardioembolism also becomes, as patients age, the main cause of ischemic stroke. Delirium, which can challenge the diagnosis, is frequent at the acute phase of stroke, and may be related to an underlying demen...

The multifaceted aspects of sleep and sleep-wake disorders following stroke
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2023 Aug 21:S0035-3787(23)00991-8. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2023.08.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep-wake disorders (SWD) are acknowledged risk factors for both ischemic stroke and poor cardiovascular and functional outcome after stroke. SWD are frequent following stroke, with sleep apnea (SA) being the most frequent SWD affecting more than half of stroke survivors. While sleep disturbances and SWD are frequently reported in the acute phase, they may persist in the chronic phase after an ischemic stroke. Despite the frequency and risk associated with SWD following stroke, screening for SWD remains ...

Patient eligibility for thrombectomy after acute stroke: Northern French Alps database analysis.
CONCLUSION: Thrombectomy could be performed in 26% of our acute ischemic stroke patients (n=115/435), and a large increase in endovascular procedures is expected over the next few years that will require close collaboration among all partners in the emergency networks. Using our RENAU stroke database, it will be possible to compare various factors contributing to effective activity. PMID: 28377089 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke and cancer
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2023 Apr 4:S0035-3787(23)00891-3. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2023.03.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAssociation between stroke and cancer is well-established and has led to a growing literature over the past decades. Risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke is increased among patients with newly diagnosed cancer and 5-10% of stroke patients bear an active cancer. All cancers are concerned, but hematological malignancy in childhood and adenocarcinoma from lung, digestive tract and pancreas in adults are most usually identified. Unique stroke mechanisms are dominated by hypercoagulation, a condition that ma...
