Dual arterial thrombosis: A diagnostic enigma
Shasthara Paneyala, SC Nemichandra, Harsha Sundaramurthy, K Vimala Christina ColacoAnnals of African Medicine 2022 21(3):291-295 Cold agglutinin disease is a rare cause of arterial thrombosis leading to stroke, commonly encountered against a background of mycoplasma pneumonia infections. A 22-year-old patient presented with acute-onset left hemiplegia preceded by a short history of fever and cough. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a right middle cerebral artery infarct. Serially repeated hemoglobin levels showed a progressive drop and peripheral smear showed evidence of hemolysis. Blood drawn for investigations wou...

Moving towards ideal and appropriate models of anticoagulation management service
This article seeks to discuss how the establishment of appropriate models of anticoagulation could contain the draw backs of the old anticoagulants and improve on the compliance, availability, affordability, and accessibility of newer anticoagulants. Successful anticoagulation has always been defined by a scientific balancing of the risk of thrombosis and the complication of hemorrhage. To be able to maintain such optimal anticoagulation requires rational drug prescription (physician factor), institutelization of monitoring of therapy (anticoagulation clinic factor) as well as active participation of patients receiving the...

Role of serum ferritin as a prognostic marker in acute ischemic stroke: A preliminary observation
Conclusions: Serum ferritin has a significant positive correlation with the severity of acute ischemic stroke (P < 0.001), and the levels correlate with the outcome of the disease (P < 0.001); the patients with higher serum ferritin at admission tend to deteriorate more as compared to those with lower levels. Thus, serum ferritin can be used as a prognostic marker in acute ischemic stroke.

Relative frequencies of neurological disorders in Northwestern Nigeria: A retrospective study
Conclusion: The outcome of this study revealed that stroke and spinal cord compression syndromes were the most common neurological disorders in our center. It also showed that individuals within their productive age (50–54 years) were more affected. Given the present state of constrained resources, coordinated efforts at the institutional, state, and federal government levels are essential to encourage prioritization, funding, and implementation of effective health-care delivery system.

Frank Aiwansoba Imarhiagbe, OA AbidakunAnnals of African Medicine 2018 17(3):156-158 Emotionalism is the abnormal expression of emotions like crying and laughing and could follow stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Emotionalism has been known to respond therapeutically to different classes of drugs including tricyclic antidepressants like imipramine, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) like sertraline and citalopram, anticonvulsants like lamotrigine, dopamine precursors like levodopa and NMDA receptor antagonists like dextromethorphan. Classical antipsychotics a...

Acute ischemic stroke thrombolysis with tenecteplase: An institutional experience from South India
Conclusion: This study confirms the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase for stroke thrombolysis in our clinical setting. Tenecteplase appears to be a suitable option for stroke thrombolysis in resource-limited settings, considering its cost-effectiveness, and ease of administration.

Burden of informal caregivers of stroke survivors: Validation of the Zarit burden interview in an African population
Conclusion: Reported burden of informal caregiving of about 33% is in our opinion huge. The moderate sensitivity and specificity of the ZBI means it could be safely used in the population studied.

Prestroke treatment of stroke risk factors: A cross-sectional survey in central Nigeria
Conclusions: A high rate of under-diagnosis and under-treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and atrial fibrillation contributes to the stroke burden in sub-Saharan Africa, especially among women. Public health measures including mass media campaigns could help reduce the burden of stroke.
