Increased serum chemerin levels associated with carotid intima-media thickness
Conclusion: Elevated serum chemerin levels appear to be associated with CIMT, thus suggesting that a link exists between chemerin and atherosclerotic ischemic cerebrovascular disease.RESUMO Introdu ção: Níveis elevados de chemerin podem prever doenças cerebrovasculares isquêmicas futuras.

Acute chorea: case series from the emergency room of a Brazilian tertiary-level center
Conclusion: Acute chorea is an uncommon and challenging problem at the emergency room, often associated with potentially treatable causes. We suggest that use of the acronym DANCE (Diagnosis of chorea, Acute stroke protocol, Normal glucose levels, Check neuroimaging, Exposure to drugs) could form a potential initial approach in the evaluation, in order to emphasize causes that require prompt proper management (e.g. thrombolysis).RESUMO Introdu ção: Coreia é um distúrbio do movimento caracterizado por contrações musculares caóticas, migratórias, aleatórias e involuntárias. Usualmente, define-se como coreia aguda q...

Post-stroke aphasia in famous writers: when Neurology left geniuses speechless
ABSTRACT Aphasia is a frequent and devastating stroke complication that does not spare even great writers. In these cases, not only one of the highest cognitive functions is suddenly lost but also the act of bringing beauty into the world. Herein, we discuss the case of three writers who had to abandon their art compulsorily due to a cerebrovascular disease: Charles Baudelaire, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Stendhal. They were magnificent writers, united by excellence in literature and an inevitable destiny that restricted their art to just a few words. They are also examples of the proximity of Neurology to Art, History, and L...

Atlas condemned to hold up the celestial heavens and bailout the mechanical thrombectomy failures in stroke?
ABSTRACT Since the Greek Aellus Galenum (129 AD - c.200/c.216), vertigo was considered a problem attributed to a cerebral disorder, diagnosed as the manifestation of apoplectiform cerebral congestion. In the mid-19th century, the Frenchman Prosper Meni ère changed this concept by placing the origin of this symptom in the inner ear. The main objective of this historical note is to highlight who Menière was, his work, and some aspects of the disease that bears his name.RESUMO Desde o grego Aellus Galenum (129 d.C. - c.200/c.216), a vertigem era considerada um problema atribu ído a um distúrbio cerebral, diagnosticado com...

Small vessel occlusion and syphilis in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke
Conclusion: The current study showed that the frequency of positive syphilis serological test was higher in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke and SVD as the potential causal mechanism. This finding could be related to the endothelial dysfunction occurring in syphilis.RESUMO Introdu ção: A sífilis é uma doença endêmica, especialmente em países de baixa e média renda, com acometimento vascular descrito em grandes vasos (aortite), porém nenhuma relação clara foi reconhecida em paciente com acidente vascular cerebral, exceto para aqueles com sífilis meningovascular. Intracerebral hemorrhage: update and future directions
ABSTRACT Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), defined as bleeding into the brain parenchyma, is a significant public health issue. Although it accounts for only 10 to 15% of strokes, it is associated with the highest morbidity and mortality rates. Despite advances in the field of stroke and neurocritical care, the principles of acute management have fundamentally remained the same over many years. The main treatment strategies include aggressive blood pressure control, early hemostasis, reversal of coagulopathies, clot evacuation through open surgical or minimally invasive surgical techniques, and the management of raised intra...

Erratum: Association between executive and food functions in the acute phase after stroke
ABSTRACT Aloysio de Castro (1881-1959) is now remembered as one of Brazil's greatest physicians and is considered the father of Brazilian neurological semiology. However, his interests went far beyond the realm of Medicine, and he became one of the most illustrious intellectuals of his time. In 1927, he gave a speech at the S ão Paulo Society of Artistic Culture on Frédéric Chopin and embarked on a journey across the composer's life and times, discussing the medical issues involving his death, as well as his lovers, his compositions, and the spiritual aspects of musical interpretation. Thus, Castro reinforced the bond s...
