Vitamin D Status and Related Factors among Korean Stroke Survivors: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.
Authors: Lee JS, Kim YH Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the vitamin D status and related factors in community-dwelling Korean stroke survivors. Data of 23,872 individuals ≥20 y who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) were analyzed. Participants who had ever been diagnosed with stroke by a doctor were defined as stroke survivors (n=431). The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level was measured by radioimmunoassay, and vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25(OH)D<20 ng/mL. The association between vitamin D and stroke status was analyzed using m...

Dysphagia Rehabilitation in Japan.
Authors: Inoue M Abstract In Japan, one of the most common causes of death in elderly people is aspiration pneumonia. Maintenance of oral hygiene and feeding functions are important elements, especially in patients with dysphagia caused by stroke, neurological diseases, and after operations on the head and neck cancer, as well as in the elderly to prevent aspiration pneumonia. It should also be noted that not only oral health care and physical therapy related to feeding functions but also dental treatment is included in the clinical management during interventions whenever needed. On the other hand, for the patient...

Construction and Quality Evaluation of the Japanese Rehabilitation Nutrition Database.
Authors: Takasaki M, Momosaki R, Wakabayashi H, Nishioka S Abstract Nutritional complications frequently occur among patients undergoing rehabilitation, and the importance of nutrition in these patients has been emphasized. The Japan Rehabilitation Nutrition Database was set up to reflect the real-world clinical practice of rehabilitation nutrition. This paper describes the construction and quality evaluation of the registry database. We constructed a large-scale database that can be used for the clinical research of nutrition for rehabili...

Effects of Acute Grape Seed Extract Supplementation on Hemodynamics in Normal Body Weight and Obese Males.
Authors: Dillon KN, Shariffi B, Thompson B, Steele R, Kim JK Abstract Recently, it has been reported that dietary supplementation with grape seed extract (GSE) ameliorates endothelial function and increase nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. Thus, we investigated if elevated blood pressure and aortic stiffness (AoS) characterized in obese individuals are attenuated following acute GSE supplementation. Twenty men (obese=10; normal body weight (NBW)=10) participated in this study. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac o...

Newly Developed Highly Bioavailable Curcumin Formulation, curcuRouge < sup > TM < /sup > , Reduces Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio in the Elderly: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2021;67(4):249-252. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.67.249.ABSTRACTElevated neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been reported as a sensitive marker for predicting poor prognosis in chronic inflammation-based diseases such as stroke, heart failure, cancers, and diabetes, as well as acute inflammatory diseases such as bacterial and viral infections, including COVID-19. NLR is also known to increase with age and is considered to be an aging marker. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in elderly volunteers to examine the effect of a newly developed, highly bioavailable curcumin formulation (...
