Association of serum inflammatory markers and diabetic retinopathy: a review of literature.
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge this is the first review in the literature that elaborates the possible association of serum inflammatory markers and diabetic retinopathy, a disease that may cause irreversible loss of vision. PMID: 30468452 [PubMed - in process]

Zyxin: a mechanotransductor to regulate gene expression.
CONCLUSIONS: Zyxin is a crucial ingredient of the cellular mechanotransducing system and can modulate the gene expression. Given its clinical relevance, zyxin is also a promising target for the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. Understanding the role of zyxin in force sensing and gene expression regulating provides a compelling challenge for future biomechanics studies, and offers attractive evidence for zyxin as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for clinical diseases. Use of cognitive enhancers: methylphenidate and analogs.
CONCLUSIONS: The rapid expansion of methylphenidate analogs onto the drug market in the past few years makes likely the occurrence of intoxications and fatalities in the next years. Careful monitoring and systematic control of methylphenidate analogs should be undertaken to reduce the uprising threat, and education efforts should be made among high-risk populations. Acute HEV hepatitis: clinical and laboratory diagnosis.
CONCLUSIONS: HEV infection appears to be a cause of acute hepatitis that we must keep in mind even in developed countries. PMID: 30720185 [PubMed - in process]

Non-hormonal treatment for male infertility: the potential role of Serenoa repens, selenium and lycopene.
CONCLUSIONS: By triggering multiple inflammatory and oxidative pathways, the combined administration of SrE, selenium and lycopene might likely improve the sperm quality. Proper studies are needed to test this hypothesis. Finally, since prostatitis can affect the sperm quality and considering the anti-estrogenic properties of SrE, we speculate about a possible specific indication in those patients with male infertility and "metabolic" prostatitis (where obesity and abnormal androgen/estrogen ratio concomitantly occur). Drug-facilitated sexual assaults (DFSA): a serious underestimated issue.
CONCLUSIONS: Most of the substances involved in DFSA, with the exception of alcohol, are under international control and scheduled under the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 and the Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971. However, several psychotropic substances and antihistamines used in sexual assaults are still not under international control, allowing for trafficking, often via the Internet and courier. The absence of international control makes it difficult to obtain accurate data on the nature and the extent of the problem. PMID: 31858579 [PubMed - in process]

Efficacy and safety of tranexamic acid in orthopaedic trauma surgery: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: TXA could effectively reduce blood transfusion, total blood loss, and wound complications in patients undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery. Furthermore, TXA does not significantly increase the incidence of thromboembolic events and mortality. Due to the limited quality of the included studies, more high-quality works are required to verify the above conclusions. PMID: 31858574 [PubMed - in process]

High likelihood for atrial fibrillation in Cushing's syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of AF in CS should be studied more precisely, both in a scientific way and at the individual patient's level. PMID: 32096188 [PubMed - in process]

Pheromone receptors and their putative ligands: possible role in humans.
Authors: Precone V, Paolacci S, Beccari T, Dalla Ragione L, Stuppia L, Baglivo M, Guerri G, Manara E, Tonini G, Herbst KL, Unfer V, Bertelli M Abstract Pheromones are ectohormones that play an important role in communication and behavior. Pheromones and pheromone receptor genes are important in mice and other mammals that rely heavily on pheromone cues to survive. Although there is controversy about whether pheromones and pheromone receptor genes have the same importance or are even active in humans, there are some hints that they might have roles in sociosexual behavior and mental disorders. The aim of this qualit...

Nootropics use in the workplace: psychiatric and ethical aftermath towards the new frontier of bioengineering.
CONCLUSIONS: Moreover, it is worth mentioning that human enhancement technologies will predictably and increasingly go hand in hand with gene editing, bioengineering, cybernetics and nanotechnology. Applications are virtually boundless, and may ultimately affect all human traits (physical strength, endurance, vision, intelligence and even personality and mood). A systematic review on the efficacy and safety of IL-6 modulatory drugs in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
Authors: Solis-García Del Pozo J, Galindo MF, Nava E, Jordán J Abstract The pandemic caused by the new SARS-CoV2 coronavirus has led to an effort to find treatments that are effective against this disease that the World Health Organization calls COVID-19. In severe cases of COVID-19, there is an increase in cytokines, among which IL-6 seems to play an important role. A search has been performed for studies using IL-6 blocking drugs (tocilizumab, siltuximab, and sarilumab) in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Also, a search of ongoing trials registered at clinicaltrials.gov was performed. We found very little pu...

Efavirenz as a psychotropic drug.
CONCLUSIONS: The exact mechanism of action of efavirenz as a psychotropic drug remains unclear and future studies should focus on evaluating whether prolonged exposure could lead to irreversible side effects. PMID: 33155233 [PubMed - in process]

Infodemiology of solid organ transplantation: relationship to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation data.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the apparent interest and awareness, we found that public interest in SOT is decreasing. Access to information is crucial for improving understanding of transplantation and motivation to donate. Health care professionals could take advantage by using the internet, and evaluation of RSVs could represent valuable feedback. PMID: 33378009 [PubMed - in process]
