The Role of Acetylsalicylic Acid in the Prevention of Pre-Eclampsia, Fetal Growth Restriction, and Preterm Birth
CONCLUSION: ASA use during pregnancy has benefits beyond reducing the risk of pre-eclampsia. The indications for taking ASA during pregnancy may be extended at some point in the future; at present, in view of the available evidence, it is still restricted to high-risk pregnancies.PMID:37378599 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0133

The Surgical Restoration of Arm and Hand Function in Tetraplegic Patients
CONCLUSION: Modern techniques of hand surgery can help suitably selected tetraparetic and tetraplegic patients regain the use of their upper limbs. Competent interdisciplinary counseling about these surgical options should be offered as early as possible to all affected persons as an integral part of their treatment plan.PMID:37378597 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0141

Neoplasms of the Appendix
CONCLUSION: Many types of appendiceal tumor that are incidentally discovered by appendectomy (for appendicitis) are adequately treated by appendectomy alone and have a good prognosis.PMID:37282595 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0136

Lung Cancer Screening With Low-Dose Computed Tomography: Current Status in Germany
CONCLUSION: Systematic lung cancer screening with low-dose CT lowers mortality from lung cancer in (current or former) heavy smokers. This benefit must be weighed against the high rate of false-positive findings and overdiagnoses.PMID:37198995 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0099

Conservative Functional Treatment of Acute Fibular Ligament Rupture of the Ankle
CONCLUSION: Conservative functional treatment is now the standard treatment in acute fibular ligament rupture of the ankle because it is low-risk, low-cost, and safe. Primary surgery is indicated in only 0.5% to 4% of cases. Physical examination for tenderness to palpation and for stability, as well as stress ultrasonography, can be used to differentiate sprains from ligamentous tears. MRI is superior only for the detection of additional injuries. Stable sprains can be successfully treated with an elastic ankle support for a few days, and unstable ligamentous ruptures with an orthosis for 5 to 6 weeks. Subsequent physiothe...
