Thermal Ablation of Renal Tumors: Indications, Techniques and Results.
CONCLUSION: The thermoablative techniques are an important addition to the armamentarium of effective treatments for locally confined renal tumors. The guidelines of the American and European urological societies now list thermoablation with RFA or CA as an option for the treatment of small renal tumors with curative intent. Thermoablation of renal tumors has not yet been studied in randomized controlled trials; these will be needed so that the efficacy of tumor control, survival rates, complication rates, and quality of life after treatment can be reliably evaluated to provide definitive confirmation of the value of inter...

The Diagnosis, Risk Stratification, and Treatment of Brugada Syndrome.
CONCLUSION: BrS is one important differential diagnosis to consider in patients presenting with syncope or sudden cardiac arrest. The goal of current research is to achieve a deeper understanding of the genetic and electrophysiological changes underlying BrS. Further insights in these areas will probably enable better risk stratification of asymptomatic BrS patients in the future. PMID: 26157012 [PubMed - in process]

Dizziness and Unstable Gait in Old Age.
CONCLUSION: If a specific cause can be identified, dizziness and gait unsteadiness in old age can often be successfully treated. The common causes can be revealed by systematic clinical examination. Controlled clinical trials on the efficacy of treatments for elderly persons are urgently needed. PMID: 26157011 [PubMed - in process]

Animal and Human Bite Wounds.
CONCLUSION: Structured surgical management of bite wounds is the most important factor in the prevention of infection. High-risk wounds must be differentiated from trivial ones. Interdisciplinary management is advisable for wounds on the hands and face. PMID: 26179017 [PubMed - in process]

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
CONCLUSION: The long-term prognosis for SLE has improved markedly in recent decades because of earlier diagnosis and optimized treatment. Further research and randomized controlled trials are needed for the development of specifically targeted therapies. PMID: 26179016 [PubMed - in process]

The Treatment of Well-Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma.
CONCLUSION: Slow tumor growth, good resectability, and susceptibility to radioactive iodine therapy lend a favorable prognosis to most cases of well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The treatment should be risk-adjusted and interdisciplinary, in accordance with the current treatment guidelines. Even metastatic thyroid carcinoma has a favorable prognosis as long as there is good iodine uptake. The newly available medical treatment options for radioactive-iodine-resistant disease need to be further studied. PMID: 26205749 [PubMed - in process]

Indications for and Risks of Elective Cesarean Section.
CONCLUSION: Scientific advances, social and cultural changes, and medicolegal considerations seem to be the main reasons for the increased acceptibility of cesarean sections. Cesarean section is, however, associated with increased risks to both mother and child. It should only be performed when it is clearly advantageous. PMID: 26249251 [PubMed - in process]

Deep Brain Stimulation in Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders.
CONCLUSION: DBS is an established treatment for various neurological and psychiatric diseases. It has been incorporated in the DGN guidelines and is now considered a standard treatment for advanced Parkinson's disease. The safety and efficacy of DBS can be expected to improve with the application of new technical developments in electrode geometry and new imaging techniques. Controlled trials would be helpful so that DBS could be extended to further indications, particularly psychiatric ones. PMID: 26334979 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Optic Neuritis.
CONCLUSION: Optic neuritis is easy to distinguish from otherv diseases affecting the optic nerve. Atypical forms of this disease and other optic nerve diseases require special treatment. For patients judged to be at high risk of developing multiple sclerosis, immune prophylaxis with beta- interferon or glatiramer acetate is recommended. PMID: 26396053 [PubMed - in process]

The Treatment of Non-Traumatic Meniscus Lesions.
CONCLUSION: For most patients with non-traumatic meniscus lesions, surgical and non-surgical treatments seem to be of equal value; only one of the six included trials revealed lower pain and symptom scores after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. In multiple trials, however, the crossover analysis showed that non-surgical treatment fails for some patients. These patients may benefit from arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Further trials are needed to better define this subgroup of patients. PMID: 26554420 [PubMed - in process]

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy.
CONCLUSION: Further randomized, controlled trials with longer follow-up will be needed to answer currently open questions about the potential for individualized surgical treatment and the proper role of pharmacotherapy. PMID: 26554319 [PubMed - in process]

Screening and Treatment in Retinopathy of Prematurity.
CONCLUSION: The available evidence for anti-VEGF treatment is on a much lower level than the evidence for laser therapy. Anti-VEGF may be a way to avoid the disadvantages of laser therapy (scarring and severe myopia). Unlike laser therapy, however, the intravitreal injection of VEGF inhibitors may suppress systemic VEGF levels and potentially harm the developing brain, lungs, or other organs. The currently open questions about anti-VEGF treatment concern its dosing, choice of drug, and long-term safety. PMID: 26568177 [PubMed - in process]

Treatment Options for Statin-Associated Muscle Symptoms.
CONCLUSION: SAMS are important adverse effects of statin treatment because they lessen drug adherence. Patients with SAMS should undergo a thorough diagnostic evaluation followed by appropriate counseling. In most cases, statins can be continued, with appropriate adjustments, even in the aftermath of SAMS. PMID: 26575138 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Triaging and Treatment of Cold-Induced Injuries.
CONCLUSION: The treatment of cold-induced injuries is based on their type, severity, and timing. The recommendations above are grade C recommendations. The current approach to reperfusion has yielded promising initial results and should be further investigated in prospective studies. PMID: 26575137 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Interdisciplinary Management of Acute Chest Pain.
CONCLUSION: Acute chest pain is a major diagnostic challenge for the physician. Common errors are traceable to non-recognition of important causes and to an inadequate diagnostic work-up. Future studies should be designed to help optimize the interdisciplinary management of patients with chest pain. PMID: 26585188 [PubMed - in process]
