The Use of Activated Charcoal to Treat Intoxications.
CONCLUSION: Even though intoxications are common, there is still no internationally valid guideline concerning the administration of activated charcoal. A precise analysis of the risks and benefits is needed for each administration, and a poison control center should be consulted for this purpose. PMID: 31219028 [PubMed - in process]

Antidepressant Withdrawal and Rebound Phenomena.
CONCLUSION: A robust evidence base now indicates that there can be acute with- drawal phenomena when antidepressants are discontinued. Putative rebound phenomena have not been adequately studied to date. It is recommended that antidepressants should be tapered off over a period of more than four weeks. The Interdisciplinary Management of Foot Drop.
CONCLUSION: The care of patients with foot drop could be optimized by interdisciplin- ary foot-drop clinics involving all of the relevant specialists. The goals of treatment should always be improved mobility in everyday life and the prevention of falls, pain, and abnormal postures. PMID: 31288916 [PubMed - in process]

Pleural Effusion in Adults-Etiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.
CONCLUSION: The proper treatment of pleural effusion can be determined only after meticulous differential diagnosis. The range of therapeutic options has recently become much wider. More data can be expected in the near future concerning diagnostic test- ing for the etiology of the effusion, better pleurodetic agents, the development of interventional techniques, and the genetic background of the affected patients. PMID: 31315808 [PubMed - in process]

Planning and Analysis of Trials Using a Stepped Wedge Design.
CONCLUSION: The necessary statistical tools for the planning and evaluation of SWD trials now stand at our disposal. Such trials nevertheless are subject to major risks, as valid results can be obtained only if the far-reaching assumptions of the model are, in fact, justified. PMID: 31431246 [PubMed - in process]

Hereditary Syndromes with Signs of Premature Aging.
CONCLUSION: Segmental progeroid syndromes are a complex group of diseases with overlapping clinical features. Current research efforts focus on the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of these diseases, most of which are very rare. This should enable the development of treatments that might be applicable to general processes of aging as well. PMID: 31452499 [PubMed - in process]

Benign Breast Disease in Women.
CONCLUSION: Benign breast changes can be definitively distinguished from malignant lesions through the selective use of avail- able diagnostic investigations and interdisciplinary collaboration. When lesions of uncertain malignant potential are found (B3 in the biopsy classification), complete excision is indicated. Prospective studies on the early diagnosis of breast cancer in lesions carrying a risk of malignancy are desirable. PMID: 31554551 [PubMed - in process]

Health Risks and Interventions in Exertional Heat Stress.
CONCLUSION: Immediately effective cooling interventions are the only causal treatment for heat stroke. Time once lost cannot be made up. Prevention (acclimatization, reduced exposure, etc.) and terminating the heat stress in good time (e.g., stopping work) are better than any cure. PMID: 31554541 [PubMed - in process]

Central Pontine Myelinosis and Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome.
CONCLUSION: ODS is a secondary neurological illness resulting from a foregoing primary disease. Though rare overall, it occurs with greater frequency in certain groups of patients. Clinicians of all specialties should therefore be familiar with the risk constellations, clinical presentation, and prevention of ODS. The treatment of ODS is still experimental at present, as no evidence-based treatment is yet available. PMID: 31587708 [PubMed - in process]

Increasing Influenza Vaccination Rates in People With Chronic Illness.
CONCLUSION: A variety of approaches can be effective. Focusing training sessions for medical practice teams on certain diseases may be of greater benefit than vacci- nation-centered training sessions. Reminder systems for doctors should be more reliably implemented. Simple strategies are perhaps the most suitable ones in the heterogeneous population of chronically ill persons. The limitations of this system- atic review include the heterogeneity of the studies that we examined and the small number of studies in each category. PMID: 31617479 [PubMed - in process]

Evidence-Based Follow-up for Adults With Cancer.
CONCLUSION: The evidence supporting the efficacy of currently recommended modalities of follow-up care for cancer patients is weak. Until more data from clinical studies become available, the current guidelines should be followed. PMID: 31658935 [PubMed - in process]

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Idiopathic Facial Paresis (Bell's Palsy).
CONCLUSION: Because 25-40% of cases of facial nerve palsy are not idiopathic, differential diagnosis is very important; key diagnostic methods include a clinical neurological examin- ation, otoscopy, and a lumbar puncture for cerebrospinal fluid examination. High-level evidence supports corticosteroid treatment for the idiopathic form of the disorder. PMID: 31709978 [PubMed - in process]

Sleep-Related Disorders in Neurology and Psychiatry.
CONCLUSION: Sleep disorders in neurology and psychiatry are a heterogeneous group of disorders with diverse manifestations. Their proper diagnosis and treatment can help prevent secondary diseases and the worsening of concomitant conditions. Care structures for the treatment of sleep disorders should be further developed. PMID: 31709972 [PubMed - in process]

The Efficacy and Evidence-Based Use of Biologics in Children and Adolescents.
CONCLUSION: The retrieved trials have deficiencies that make it difficult to reliably evaluate the efficacy, safety, and utility of mAb/FP for children and adolescents with chronic inflammatory diseases. mAb/FP nonetheless represent a treatment option to be considered in case conventional immune-modulating drugs are ineffective. Researcher-initiated, high-quality trials and manufacturer-independent, systematic long-term evaluations of adverse effects (e.g., tumors) are sorely needed. PMID: 31711560 [PubMed - in process]

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Tuberculosis.
CONCLUSION: Rapid diagnosis and targeted treatment are essential to prevent an unfavorable course of the disease as well as its transmission to other individuals. In patients presenting with unclear symptoms, tuberculosis should always be considered as a differential diagnosis. The diagnosis of latent tuberculosis and decision-making regarding its treatment are difficult because of the lack of specific biomarkers and of relevant data from clinical trials.
