Effect of nonsurgical periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Nonsurgical treatment improved the periodontal condition of patients with periodontitis and RA, with beneficial effects upon the clinical and laboratory test parameters (DAS28 and ESR), while other inflammatory markers showed a marked tendency to decrease. However, all the studies included in the review involved small samples sizes and follow-up periods of no more than 6 months. Larger and particularly longitudinal studies are therefore needed to more firmly establish possible significant relations between the two disease processes. Predictability of short implants ( < 10 mm) as a treatment option for the rehabilitation of atrophic maxillae. A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this review, short implants are seen to offer clinical results in terms of survival, bone loss and complications similar to those of longer implants. PMID: 26946199 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The role of angiogenesis in implant dentistry part II: The effect of bone-grafting and barrier membrane materials on angiogenesis.
CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenesis is one of the key factors, which plays a critical role in success rate of GBR technique and is seriously considered in manufacturing bone-grafting and barrier membrane materials. However, there is still lack of clinical and in-vivo studies addressing the effect of angiogenesis in treatments using bone-grafting and barrier membrane materials. The role of angiogenesis in implant dentistry part I: Review of titanium alloys, surface characteristics and treatments.
CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenesis is of great importance in implant dentistry in a manner that most of the surface characteristics and treatments of dental implants are directed toward creating a more pro-angiogenic surface on dental implants. A number of studies discussed the effect of titanium alloys, dental implant surface characteristic and treatments on agiogenesis process. However, clinical trials and in-vivo studies delineating the mechanisms of dental implants, and their surface characteristics or treatments, action in angiogenesis processes are lagging. Segmental sandwich osteotomy of the posterior mandible in pre-implant surgery - A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Segmental Sandwich Osteotomy should be considered as a well documented technique for the rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior mandible, with long-term postsurgical follow-up. The success rates are very high, as well as the survival of the dental implants placed in the augmented area. PMID: 27918747 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Inflammatory papillary hyperplasia: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: IPH is a rare oral lesion and its pathogenesis still remains unclear. Its presentation among non-denture-wearers is extremely unusual. PMID: 27918740 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

What is the frequency of anatomical variations and pathological findings in maxillary sinuses among patients subjected to maxillofacial cone beam computed tomography? A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the main indication of CBCT of the maxillary sinus in dentistry is sinus floor elevation/treatment planning and evaluation prior to dental implant placement, this imaging modality is increasingly also used for endodontic and periodontal purposes. There is no consensus regarding the cutoff point beyond which mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus should be regarded as pathological, and the definition of maxillary sinusitis moreover varies greatly in the scientific literature. In this regard, international consensus is required in relation to these concepts, with a clear distinction between healthy a...

Coffee is protective against oral and pharyngeal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: The results show an inverse association between high coffee consumption and the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancers, which indicates that coffee may have a protective role against these cancers. Further larger prospective observational cohort studies are needed to address any effect of other possible co-factors. PMID: 28809372 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Oral manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus. A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite multiple oral manifestations associated with DM, awareness of the associations between diabetes, oral health, and general health is inadequate. It is necessary for doctors and dentists to be aware of the various oral manifestations of diabetes in order to make an early diagnosis. PMID: 28809366 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low-level laser therapy for treatment of neurosensory disorders after orthognathic surgery: A systematic review of randomized clinical trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Individual studies suggested a positive effect of low-level laser therapy on reduction of postoperative pain and acceleration of improvement of paresthesia related to orthognathic surgery. However, due to the insufficient number and heterogeneity of studies, a meta-analysis evaluating the outcomes of interest was not performed, and a pragmatic recommendation about the use of laser therapy is not possible. This systematic review was conducted according to the statements of PRISMA and was registered at PROSPERO under the number CRD42016043258. PMID: 29053658 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficacy of different methods used for dry socket prevention and risk factor analysis: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: All treatments included in the review were aimed at decreasing the incidence of dry socket. Locally administering chlorhexidine or applying platelet-rich plasma reduces the likelihood of developing this complication. Antibiotic prescription does not avoid postoperative complications after lower third molar surgery. With regard to risk factors, all of the articles selected suggest that patient age, history of previous infection and the difficulty of the extraction are the most common predisposing factors for developing dry socket. There is no consensus that smoking, gender or menstrual cycles are risk factors. ...

Bifid mandibular condyles: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: BMC may have congenital or traumatic etiology. Hypomobility and arthralgia are the most frequent symptoms and treatment options are often conservative. PMID: 30341271 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Alveolar distraction osteogenesis for dental implant treatments of the vertical bone atrophy: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Both alveolar distraction osteogenesis and autogenous bone graft are effective bone regeneration techniques for the treatment of mandibular vertical bone atrophy. A level B recommendation can be established for the use of alveolar vertical distraction osteogenesis for the treatment of the mandibular vertical bone atrophy. Bone regeneration in diabetic patients. A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: A low grade of evidence regarding the use of OBRT in diabetic patients was found. The recommendation for this intervention in diabetic patients is considered type C due to the high heterogeneity of the type of diabetic patients included and the variability of the techniques applied. PMID: 31246936 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Analyses of odontogenic tumours: the most recent classification proposed by the World Health Organization (2017).
CONCLUSIONS: The new odontogenic tumour list has been simplified with the objective of improving its role as an international guide for diagnosis. Some changes have been possible thanks to the application of immunohistochemistry and molecular genetic techniques that allow better characterization of certain tumours. Further clinicopathological and molecular studies are needed so that this new classification can be consolidated and/or amended. PMID: 32388513 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
