Exploring the contribution of case study research to the evidence base for occupational therapy: a scoping review
ConclusionsCase study research is useful when large-scale inquiry is not appropriate; for cases of complexity, early intervention efficacy, theory testing or when small participant numbers are available. It appears a viable methodology to contribute to the evidence base for occupation and health as it has been used to evaluate interventions across a breadth of occupational therapy practice contexts. Viability could be enhanced through consistent conduct and reporting to allow pooling of case data. A conceptual model and description of case study research in occupational therapy is proposed to support this.Systematic review...

What is the utility of blood beta-hydroxybutyrate measurements in emergency department in patients without diabetes: a systematic review
ConclusionThe evidence for any utility of BHB measurement in the ED in absence of diabetes is limited to the paediatric population, specifically children presenting with symptoms of gastroenteritis. Any role in adults remains unexplored.

Screening for the primary prevention of fragility fractures among adults aged 40 years and older in primary care: systematic reviews of the effects and acceptability of screening and treatment, and the accuracy of risk prediction tools
ConclusionAn offer of 2-step screening with risk assessment and BMD measurement toselected postmenopausal females with low prevalence of prior fracture probably results in a small reduction in the risk of clinical fragility fracture and hip fracture compared to no screening. These findings were most applicable to the use of clinical FRAX for risk assessment and were not replicated in theoffer-to-screen population where the rate of response to mailed screening questionnaires was low. Limited direct evidence on harms of screening were available; using study data to provide estimates, there may be a moderate degree of overdia...

Age-specific information resources to address the needs of young people with stroke: a scoping review protocol
AbstractBackground and aimsYoung people with stroke (YPwS) persistently experience challenges with disability, social reintegration, employment, and financial stability to provide for themselves and their families. The aims of this scoping review are to (1) identify and collate information resources for YPwS and evidence-based self-managements programs and (2) identify gaps in age-specific resources available for YPwS after traditional rehabilitation services have ended and/or who are returning to live in the community.MethodsWe will include both qualitative and quantitative studies, including all study designs. Participan...

Determining the safety and effectiveness of Tai Chi: a critical overview of 210 systematic reviews of controlled clinical trials
ConclusionsThe findings suggest Tai Chi has multidimensional effects, including physical, psychological and quality of life benefits for a wide range of conditions, as well as multimorbidity. Clinically important benefits were most consistently reported for Parkinson ’s disease, falls risk, knee osteoarthritis, low back pain, cerebrovascular, and cardiovascular diseases including hypertension. For most conditions, higher-quality SRs with rigorous primary studies are required.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42021225708.

Oral anticoagulants: a systematic overview of reviews on efficacy and safety, genotyping, self-monitoring, and stakeholder experiences
ConclusionsFor stroke prevention in AF, direct OACs seem to be more effective and safer than usual care, and apixaban (5  mg twice daily) had the best profile. For VTE, there was no strong evidence that direct OACs were better than usual care. Education and pharmacist management could improve coagulation control. Both clinicians and patients rated efficacy and safety as the most important factors in managing AF and V TE.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42017084263 —one deviation; efficacy and safety were from one review.

Changes in glycaemic control of oral anti-diabetic medications assessed by continuous glucose monitors among patients with type 2 diabetes: a protocol of network meta-analysis
DiscussionThe review is anticipated to provide up to date evidence for further studies and clinic practices regarding glycaemic control, hypoglycaemia, and hyperglycaemia issues. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.Trial registrationPROSPEROCRD42020188399.

Economic evaluations of health care interventions in oropharyngeal dysphagia after stroke: protocol for a systematic review
DiscussionThe protocol for this systematic review is the first step to assess the cost-effectiveness of the healthcare interventions that have been described as potential treatments for post-stroke OD. This systematic review will summarise the current evidence on the relation between cost and benefits associated with the appropriate management of OD in post-stroke patients.Trial registrationPROSPEROCRD42020136245

The management of anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation and history of falls or risk of falls: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
DiscussionThis review will be the first to summarize direct and indirect evidence on the safety and efficacy of anticoagulant treatments in atrial fibrillation patients at risk of falls or with a history of falls. The findings will be important to patients, clinicians, and health policy-makers to inform best practices in the use of these treatments.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO registry number:CRD42020201086

Adult stroke survivor ’s reintegration to normal living: a scoping review protocol
This study will include studies involving participants ≥ 18 years old, who are stroke survivors rein tegrating to normal living in the community. With no time limitations, English language publications and all study designs reporting on reintegration to normal living of stroke survivors’ will be sourced. The abstract and full-text screening will be conducted by two independent reviewers, includin g data charting. Thematic analysis will be used to align relevant themes and will be presented in a narrative.DiscussionWe anticipate that the scoping review will highlight the available resources and evidence on factors that ...

Reporting quality evaluation of the stroke clinical practice guidelines: a systematic review
ConclusionsCurrent stroke CPGs reports are of low quality. We recommend that guideline developers improve the quality of reporting of key information and improve the management of conflicts of interest. We recommend that guideline developers consider the RIGHT checklist as an important tool for guideline development.Trial registrationhttps://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/PBWUX.

Carotid endarterectomy with patch angioplasty versus primary closure in patients with symptomatic and significant stenosis: a systematic review with meta-analyses and trial sequential analysis of randomized clinical trials
ConclusionsThis systematic review showed no conclusive evidence of a difference between carotid endarterectomy with patch angioplasty versus primary closure of the arterial wall on all-cause mortality,<  30 days mortality,<  30 days stroke, or any other serious adverse events. These conclusions are based on data from 15 to 35 years ago, obtained in trials with very low certainty according to GRADE, and should be interpreted cautiously. Therefore, we suggest conducting new randomized clinical trials patch angiopla sty versus primary closure in carotid endarterectomy in symptomatic patients with an internal c...
