Public Health Initiatives and Stroke Awareness
Our group demonstrated poor stroke literacy 5 years ago*. We wanted to reassess baseline knowledge of stroke risks factors, signs or symptoms, anatomical location, and behaviors to determine the impact of public awareness campaigns.

Predictors of Stroke, Myocardial Infarction or Death within 30 Days of Carotid Artery Stenting: Results from the International Carotid Stenting Study
Stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and death are complications of carotid artery stenting (CAS). The effect of baseline patient demographic factors, processes of care, and technical factors during CAS on the risk of stroke, MI, or death within 30 days of CAS in the International Carotid Stenting Study (ICSS) were investigated.

Pioglitazone After Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack
In patients without diabetes but who have insulin resistance along with a recent history of ischemic stroke or TIA, the risk of stroke or myocardial infarction was lower among those patients who received pioglitazone than among those who received placebo.

Results of Early Versus Delayed Carotid Endarterectomy After a Recent Mild to Moderate Stroke
Patients with recent stroke represent a heterogeneous group in which the risks of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) vary according to the clinical presentation and the findings on imaging studies. Herein we compared the results of early vs delayed CEA after a recent stroke in patients with similar neurologic presentation.

Development of a Validated Model to Predict 30-Day Stroke and One-Year Survival After Carotid Endarterectomy for Asymptomatic Stenosis Using the Vascular Quality Initiative
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis when perioperative stroke rates are low and patients survive long enough to benefit from the intervention. Our objective was to develop and to validate a simple risk prediction index for 30-day stroke and 1-year mortality to guide optimal selection of patients for CEA.

Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaque Characteristics on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Relate With History of Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease
Carotid plaque thickness and stenosis are associated with a history of ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD). Carotid intraplaque hemorrhage is associated with ischemic stroke but not with CHD.

Prevention of Stroke With Ticagrelor in Patients With Prior Myocardial Infarction: Insights from PEGASUS-TIMI 54 (Prevention of Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Prior Heart Attack Using Ticagrelor Compared to Placebo on a Background of Aspirin-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction)
In patients with prior myocardial infarction, ticagrelor 60  mg twice daily reduces risk of stroke without an excess of hemorrhagic stroke but with more major bleeding.

Pre-operative Carotid Plaque Echolucency Assessment has no Predictive Value for Long-Term Risk of Stroke or Cardiovascular Death in Patients Undergoing Carotid Endarterectomy
This study evaluated the prognostic value of pre-operative plaque echolucency for future stroke and cardiovascular death in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy in the first Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial (ACST-1).

IP105. Severity and Outcomes of Perioperative Stroke After Carotid Artery Stenting and Carotid Endarterectomy: Analysis of a National Database
Different randomized trials have shown an excess of minor strokes in patients assigned to carotid artery stenting (CAS) compared with those assigned to carotid endarterectomy (CEA), with no difference in rates of disabling stroke or death between the two approaches. We sought to assess the severity and impact of perioperative stroke after CEA and CAS using a real-world national data set.

Risk factor profile and anatomic features of previously asymptomatic patients presenting with carotid-related stroke
Although carotid atherosclerotic-mediated stroke remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, some have suggested intervention in carotid stenosis should be limited to symptomatic patients given the advances in medical therapy. The present study was conducted to assess the atherosclerotic risk factor profiles, anatomic features, and clinical outcomes of previously asymptomatic patients admitted with stroke of carotid etiology.
