The impact of minor blood transfusion on the outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting
Conclusion Minor perioperative bleeding and subsequent transfusion of 1–2 RBC units did not affect the risk of early death, but increased the risk of other major adverse events. Minimizing perioperative bleeding and prevention of even low-volume RBC transfusion may improve the outcome after CABG.

Haemodynamic changes with paracetamol in critically-ill children
Conclusion There is a significant but modest reduction in blood pressure post-paracetamol in critically-ill children. This is likely related to a change in systemic vascular resistance.

Assessment of macro- and micro-oxygenation parameters during fractional fluid infusion: A pilot study
Conclusions Maximal fluid infusion improves macro- and micro-circulatory oxygenation parameters. For VO2-Responders, only ScVO2 and cerebral rSO2 could serve as markers of tissue hypoxia.

Association between ventilatory settings and development of acute respiratory distress syndrome in mechanically ventilated patients due to brain injury
Conclusions In a cohort of brain-injured patients the development of ARDS was not common. Driving pressure was associated with the development of this disease.

Impact of transfusion on stroke after cardiovascular interventions: Meta-analysis of comparative studies
Conclusion Blood transfusion is associated with a significantly increased risk of postoperative stroke in patients undergoing cardiovascular interventions. Registration The present meta-analysis is registered in PROSPERO, code CRD42016046426.

Inferior vena cava diameter variation compared with pulse pressure variation as predictors of fluid responsiveness in patients with sepsis
Conclusions The present study demonstrated better performance of the PPV than the IVDV. A threshold value more than 10% may be used for identifying fluid responders.

Troponin elevation predicts critical care needs and in-hospital mortality after thrombolysis in white but not black stroke patients
Conclusion Troponin is a useful predictor of poor outcome in white but not black post-IVT stroke patients.

Incidence and predictors of ischemic cerebrovascular stroke among patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support
Conclusion Ischemic stroke is not uncommon in subjects receiving ECMO support with independent risk factor being a pre-ECMO lactic acid greater than 10 mmol/L.

The prognostic significance of troponin I elevation in acute ischemic stroke
Conclusion Positive TnI greater than or equal to 0.5 μg/L in patients with acute ischemic stroke was independently associated with worse outcomes. Patients with diagnosis of MI represent a particularly high-risk subgroup.

Finding the red flags: Swallowing difficulties after cardiac surgery in patients with prolonged intubation
Conclusions Patients identified with dysphagia after cardiac surgery had a high incidence of silent aspiration and increased risk of pneumonia. However, referral rates were low in this at-risk patient group. Early identification and ongoing assessment and appropriate management of dysphagic patients by a speech-language pathologist are strongly recommended.

Prolonged postoperative respiratory support after proximal thoracic aortic surgery: Is deep hypothermic circulatory arrest a risk factor?
Conclusions Prolonged postoperative respiratory support is common after proximal aortic surgery. The use of DHCA was not associated with this complication in the overall cohort, although longer DHCA times were predictive when only the subset of patients undergoing DHCA was analyzed. Knowledge of the risk factors for PPRS after proximal aortic surgery should improve preoperative risk stratification and postoperative management of these patients.
