Technology for maintaining oral care after stroke: considerations for patient-centered practice.
CONCLUSION: The available device and technologies may help substantially with the accommodations needed for post-stroke oral care, improving the oral health of stroke survivors. Good oral health confers benefit to overall health and well-being and could enhance recovery and rehabilitation outcomes. Nonetheless, more research is necessary to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of technology in stroke contexts. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Oral care may be challenging after stroke due to patient fatigue, hemiparesis, cognitive impairments, and other impaired body functions. Poor oral hygiene may impact stroke re...

Developing a personalised self-management system for post stroke rehabilitation; utilising a user-centred design methodology.
Conclusion: The methodological approach has ensured that the interactive technology has been driven by the needs of the stroke survivors and their carers in the context of their journey to both recovery and adaptation. Underpinned by theories of motor relearning, neuroplasticity, self-management and behaviour change, the PSMrS developed in this study has resulted in a personalised system for self-managed rehabilitation, which has the potential to change motor behaviour and promote the achievement of life goals for stroke survivors. Implications for Rehabilitation Radical innovation and the adoption of a self-management par...

Development and preliminary evaluation of a novel low cost VR-based upper limb stroke rehabilitation platform using Wii technology.
Conclusions: Given the preliminary findings, it would be beneficial to extend the case study in terms of duration and participants and to conduct an acceptability and feasibility study with community dwelling survivors. Implications for Rehabilitation Low-cost, off-the-shelf game sensors, such as the Nintendo Wii remote, are acceptable by stroke survivors as an add-on to upper limb stroke rehabilitation but have to be bespoked to provide high-fidelity and real-time kinematic tracking of the arm movement. Providing therapists with real-time and remote monitoring of the quality of the movement and not just the amount of prac...

Role of ankle foot orthoses in functional stability of individuals with stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The study found that individuals with unilateral stroke clearly demonstrated improvements in functional stability when they were provided with AFOs. This outcome could be used in the optimization of balance rehabilitation of individuals with stroke. Implications for Rehabilitation Functional stability is impaired in individuals with stroke. Functional Reach Test (FRT) was used to assess the role of ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) in balance control. Individuals with stroke improved their functional stability while they were provided with AFOs. Functional Reach Test could assist clinicians in the evaluation of postu...

Bimanual wheelchair propulsion by people with severe hemiparesis after stroke.
Conclusions: Individuals with severe arm impairment in the chronic stage of stroke retain sufficient strength and coordination with their paretic arm to manoeuvre bimanual, lever-driven wheelchairs. We suggest bimanual, lever-driven propulsion should be explored in stroke rehabilitation practice as an alternative to compensatory wheelchair propulsion, as it has the potential to exercise healthy movement synergies, which may in turn help drive use-dependent motor recovery. Implications for rehabilitation Severe arm impairment arising after stroke does not generally eliminate the motor dexterity needed to bimanually propel a...

Examining the effect of virtual reality therapy on cognition post-stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Conclusion: VR therapy was not superior to control interventions in improving cognition in individuals with stroke. Future research should include high-quality and adequately powered trials examining the impact of virtual reality therapy on cognition post-stroke.Implications for rehabilitationVirtual reality therapy is a promising new form of technology that has been shown to increase patient satisfaction towards stroke rehabilitation.Virtual reality therapy has the added benefits of providing instant feedback, and the difficulty can be easily modified, underscoring the user-friendliness of this form of rehabilitation.Virt...

Available apps for stroke telerehabilitation during corona virus disease 2019 confinement in Spain.
CONCLUSIONS: There are few specific Apps for the Stroke rehabilitation of sensory-motor impairments, and with important limitations that prevent their incorporation into clinical practice. The creation and adaptation of Apps for health professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists and their users are recommended. Implications for rehabilitation It is necessary to create and adapt specific telerehabilitation tools to address sensory-motor disorders. Telerehabilitation should be introduced in the clinical practice of physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Telerehabilitation via App can be a solution, ea...

Effectiveness of task-specific training using assistive devices and task-specific usual care on upper limb performance after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Both TST-AAD and TSUC improved the upper limb performance after stroke. In the sub-acute phase after stroke, TST-AAD was more effective than TSUC in reducing the upper limb impairment, although findings were based on only three studies. In the chronic phase, TST-AAD and TSUC showed similar effectiveness. No differences between the two types of training were found at the follow-up measurements. Future studies should describe training, device usage and criteria of task specificity in a standardized way to ease comparison.Implications for rehabilitationArm or hand function is often undertreated in stroke patients,...

Perspectives and expectations of stroke survivors using egocentric cameras for monitoring hand function at home: a mixed methods study
CONCLUSIONS: There was high acceptance among stroke survivors regarding the use of wearable cameras for rehabilitation purposes in the future. Concerns to be managed include discomfort, self-consciousness, and the privacy of others.Implications for rehabilitationThe egocentric camera was easy for the stroke survivors to use at home. However, they expressed a preference for cameras to be less noticeable and lighter in the future to minimize self-consciousness and discomfort.Expectations for future use of an egocentric camera for upper limb rehabilitation at home from the perspectives of stroke survivors included receiving f...
