Differential Effects of Strong and Regular Statins on the Clinical Outcome of Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Following Coronary Stent Implantation.
Conclusions:In patients with mild-to-moderate CKD, only strong statins were associated with lower risk compared with no statin, but regular statins were not. It is possible that taking a strong statin from the early stage of CKD is useful for suppression of cardiovascular events. PMID: 25739954 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparison of cardiovascular mortality in the great East Japan and the great hanshin-awaji earthquakes - a large-scale data analysis of death certificates.
CONCLUSIONS: Following the GEJ and H-A earthquakes, there was a sharp increase in CVD mortality. The effect of the disaster was sustained for months after the H-A earthquake, but was diminished after the GEJ Earthquake. (Circ J 2015; 79: 1000-1008). PMID: 25912562 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of Patent Foramen Ovale in the Japanese Population - Autopsy Study.
CONCLUSIONS: PFO is under-reported in autopsy reports. Re-evaluation of heart specimens disclosed that theprevalence of PFO was 13.6%. The prevalence was lower than reported in the past. PMID: 26084379 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic Significance of Neuroadrenergic Dysfunction for Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: Dysregulation of BP variation and cardiac MIBG uptake were associated with cardiovascular events following AMI. Examining ABPM with MIBG imaging may potentially improve risk stratification in these patients. PMID: 26155851 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Age- and Sex-Specific Burden of Cardiovascular Disease Attributable to 5 Major and Modifiable Risk Factors in 10 Asian Countries of the Western Pacific Region.
Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, causing an estimated 18 million deaths annually. Much of the burden of CVD resides in lower- and middle-income countries, particularly those Asian countries comprising the Western Pacific Region. Epidemiological studies have convincingly shown that up to 90% of all CVD can be explained by a small number of modifiable risk factors, including blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, total cholesterol and excess body weight. However, the relationship between these risk factors and coronary artery disease and stroke often differ by age and se...

Use of Warfarin in Elderly Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - Subanalysis of the J-RHYTHM Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Warfarin could have beneficial effects even in very old NVAF patients if INR is kept between 1.6 and 2.59. PMID: 26329097 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ticagrelor vs. Clopidogrel in Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome - Randomized, Double-Blind, Phase III PHILO Study.
CONCLUSIONS: In ACS patients from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, event rates of primary safety and efficacy endpoints were higher, albeit not significantly, in ticagrelor-treated patients compared with clopidogrel-treated patients. This observation could be explained by the small sample size, imbalance in clinical characteristics and low number of events in the PHILO population. Preoperative Tissue Doppler Imaging-Derived Atrial Conduction Time Predicts Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Mitral Valve Surgery for Mitral Valve Regurgitation.
CONCLUSIONS: PA-TDI duration was an independent predictor of POAF after MVS. Patients with PA-TDI duration >159.4 ms should be considered high risk and treated appropriately to improve outcome. PMID: 26538374 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Outcomes of Drug-Eluting Stents vs. Bare-Metal Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients Under Dialysis - A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Among AMI patients on dialysis undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions, DES implantation significantly reduced the risk of recurrent MI, CV death and all-cause mortality compared with BMS implantation. PMID: 26581755 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Nine-Year Trend of Anticoagulation Use, Thromboembolic Events, and Major Bleeding in Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - Shinken Database Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The 9-year trend of stroke prevention indicated a steady increase of OAC prescription and a partial improvement of TE and MB. Even in the era of DOAC, TE prevention was insufficient in high-risk patients, and DOAC were associated with increased extracranial bleeding. PMID: 26794283 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic Impact of Loop Diuretics in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure - Effects of Addition of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitors and β-Blockers.
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic use of loop diuretics is significantly associated with worse prognosis in CHF patients in a dose-dependent manner, whereas the triple combination of RAAS inhibitor(s), MRA, and β-blocker(s) is associated with better prognosis when combined with low-dose loop diuretics. Pacing From the Right Ventricular Septum and Development of New Atrial Fibrillation in Paced Patients With Atrioventricular Block and Preserved Left Ventricular Function.
CONCLUSIONS: RV septum pacing may induce AF in up to one-quarter of patients paced for atrioventricular block, according to the frequency of pacing. More importantly, in such patients, AF induced by RV pacing and a paced QRS duration ≥155 ms at pacemaker implantation are significantly associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, we recommend pacing from sites producing a paced QRS duration <155 ms and avoiding unnecessary RV pacing. (Circ J 2016; 80: 2302-2309). PMID: 27680658 [PubMed - in process]
