Phenylephrine and norepinephrine increase blood pressure through opposing physiologic mechanisms in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs receiving acepromazine
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Sep 5:1-7. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.06.0147. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To elucidate the cardiovascular effects of escalating doses of phenylephrine and norepinephrine in dogs receiving acepromazine and isoflurane.ANIMALS: 8 beagles aged 1 to 2 years (7.4 to 11.2 kg).METHODS: All dogs received acepromazine 0.01 mg/kg, propofol 4 to 5 mg/kg, and isoflurane and were mechanically ventilated. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) from a femoral artery catheter and continuous electrocardiogram were recorded. Cardiac output (CO) was measured with transpulmonary thermodilution. Systemic vascular resistance (SV...

Defining a species-specific K constant in American Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) through use of computed tomography
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Aug 28:1-5. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.06.0131. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To use CT measurements to define the body surface area (BSA) formula in American bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) and calculate the species-specific shape constant (K) to suggest chemotherapeutic doses.ANIMALS: 12 American bullfrogs owned by the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Laboratory Animal Resources underwent CT scans without anesthesia or sedation in November 2022.METHODS: As part of this prospective study, each American bullfrog underwent a complete physical exam and CT scan. 3-D...

Application of a topical anesthetic reduces pain-associated parameters during spermatic cord transection in piglet castration using a minimal anesthesia model
This study assessed the use of a topical anesthetic as a feasible approach to reduce pain during piglet castration using a minimal anesthesia protocol.ANIMALS: 18 male piglets, aged 3-6 days, were included in this study.METHODS: A minimal anesthetic state was induced with isoflurane administered by facemask, with anesthetic depth individually adjusted based on responses to interdigital pinch. To desensitize the scrotal skin, a vapocoolant was applied 3 times. Scrotal incisions were made subsequently and Tri-Solfen (TS) or Placebo (P) was administered in both incisional gaps. After 30 seconds, the spermatic cords were sever...

Comparison of incisional, transverse abdominis plane, and rectus sheath blocks in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Jul 3:1-8. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.02.0040. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To compare the analgesia provided by incisional (Incisional), transverse abdominis plane (TAP), and rectus sheath (RS) blocks in dogs submitted for ovariohysterectomy (OHE).ANIMALS: 22 female mixed-breed dogs were allocated into 3 treatments of Incisional (n = 7), TAP (n = 7), and RS (n = 8) and underwent OHE from April 4 to December 6, 2022.PROCEDURES: After premedication with acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg) and morphine (0.5 mg/kg), anesthesia was induced (6 mg/kg) and maintained (0.4 mg/kg/min) with propofol. Each dog randomly...

Agreement of cardiac output measurements by esophageal Doppler and transesophageal echocardiography with intermittent pulmonary artery thermodilution during pharmacologic manipulation of hemodynamics in anesthetized dogs
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Jul 3:1-11. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.05.0101. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To compare cardiac output (CO) measurements by transesophageal echocardiography (TEECO) and esophageal Doppler monitor (EDMCO) with pulmonary artery thermodilution (PATDCO) in anesthetized dogs subjected to pharmacological interventions. The effect of treatments on EDM-derived indexes was also investigated.ANIMALS: 6 healthy male dogs (10.8 ± 0.7 kg).METHODS: Dogs were anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane, mechanically ventilated, and monitored with invasive mean arterial pressure (MAP), end-tidal isoflurane concentr...
