Comorbidity status of deceased COVID-19 in-patients in Italy
CONCLUSION: In those deceased in-hospital due to COVID-19 in Italy, disease combinations defined by multiple cardio-respiratory, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric diseases occur more frequently than expected. This finding indicates a need to investigate the possible role of these clinical profiles in the chain of events that lead to death in individuals who have contracted SARS-CoV-2.PMID:34169447 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-01914-y

Head CT in centenarians: emergency and non-emergency findings
CONCLUSIONS: In emergency, CT plays a pivotal role in defining an immediate diagnosis and from a medico-legal point of view, resulting together with clinical observation the main strategy in the management of centenarians. By the analysis of NENP we may support that centenarians' brains on CT are similar to those of "85-90".PMID:33934276 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-01862-7

Age-related composition changes in swallowing-related muscles: a Dixon MRI study
CONCLUSIONS: IMF is primarily associated with age-related composition changes in swallowing-related muscles, and it is commonly observed in the tongue and pharyngeal muscles. The geniohyoid muscle is more at risk of muscle atrophy rather than fatty infiltration. In addition, tongue pressure can be a parameter for the evaluation of swallowing-related muscle mass.PMID:33904143 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-01859-2

Adverse cardiovascular magnetic resonance phenotypes are associated with greater likelihood of incident coronavirus disease 2019: findings from the UK Biobank
CONCLUSIONS: Observational reports of cardiovascular involvement after COVID-19 may, at least partly, reflect pre-existing cardiac status rather than COVID-19 induced alterations.PMID:33683678 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-01808-z

Association between vision impairment and cognitive decline in older adults with stroke: Health and Retirement Study.
Abstract Stroke survivors may experience multiple residual symptoms post-stroke, including vision impairment (VI) and cognitive decline. Prior studies have shown that VI is associated with cognitive decline, but have not evaluated the contribution of VI to post-stroke cognitive changes. We used data from four waves (2010-2016) of the Health and Retirement Study to investigate the cognitive trajectories of stroke survivors with and without VI. Vision (excellent-very good[ref], good, fair-poor) and stroke diagnosis were self-reported. Cognition was defined using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status. Regressi...

Green space exposure on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in older adults:  a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.
CONCLUSIONS: This review supports increasing green space exposure in terms of the prevention of death and cardiovascular outcomes in older individuals. Effective measures to increase or preserve greenspaces should therefore be considered as important public health interventions. PMID: 32951189 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
