Viral diseases of the nervous system-Selected new and old viruses
Nervenarzt. 2023 Mar 21:1-8. doi: 10.1007/s00115-023-01452-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTViral diseases of the nervous system are ancient and poliomyelitis was described in Egypt as early as 2000 BC. They can cause a wide range of neurological symptoms, such as meningitis, encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, Guillain-Barré-like syndrome and stroke, often leaving mild to severe residuals. Depending on the pathogen, the symptoms appear quickly within hours, or lead to increasing chronic symptoms within 1 week or months. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which was newly identified in January...

Comparison of acute stroke care pathways-A  qualitative multicenter study in three referring hospitals of a stroke network
CONCLUSION: The study provides insights into different stroke care pathways of three different referring hospitals of a stroke network. The results can be used to derive potentials for improvement of other referring hospitals; however, this study is too small to provide reliable information about their potential effectiveness. Future studies should investigate whether implementation of these recommendations actually leads to improvements and under which conditions they are successful. To ensure patient-centeredness, the perspectives of patients and relatives should also be included.PMID:36867196 | DOI:10.1007/s00115-023-01453-z

Arterial ischemic stroke in childhood and adolescence : Time-critical emergency in pediatrics
Nervenarzt. 2022 Nov 16:1-13. doi: 10.1007/s00115-022-01409-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChildhood arterial ischemic stroke is one of the most time-critical pediatric emergencies but is often diagnosed with a prognostically relevant time delay. The reasons are low awareness, sometimes unspecific clinical presentation with a wide variety of critical differential diagnoses and less coordinated acute care structures. The revascularization strategies established for adults also show sometimes spectacular success in children. These should therefore also be made available for affected children if possible, although the evide...

Neurothrombectomy 2022-Extension of indications and technical innovations
Nervenarzt. 2022 Jul 26. doi: 10.1007/s00115-022-01353-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor advanced territorial ischemia numerous retrospective and prospective studies have shown a positive effect of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) compared to best medicinal treatment alone. For patients with minor stroke (NIHSS < 6) there is currently a lack of evidence for MT. Appropriate study protocols must differentiate between patients with large vessel occlusion with disproportionately mild symptoms and more distal vascular occlusion and therefore correspondingly fewer clinical symptoms. The role of intravenous lysis treatment befo...
