A Scoping Review of the Effect of Classroom Acoustic Conditions on University Students' Listening, Learning, and Well-Being
CONCLUSIONS: It would be beneficial for acoustic modifications to be made in classrooms to enhance students' listening, learning, and well-being. Limitations of the reviewed studies and future research needs are discussed.PMID:37734163 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00154

Long-Term Outcomes for Individuals With Childhood Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: Children with CAS are at risk for persistent speech sound errors into adulthood. For children showing limited progress with more traditional speech therapy, alternative interventions should be explored. Individuals with persistent speech sound errors are more likely to have a history of early motor deficits. Regardless of persistence, participants with CAS demonstrated ongoing weaknesses in literacy, phonological processing skills, and complex speech production tasks.PMID:37734154 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00647

Combining Languages in Bilingual Input: Using Experimental Evidence to Formulate Bilingual Exposure Strategies
CONCLUSIONS: Together, experimental studies of word learning indicate that bilingual children can effectively learn from dual-language input but that different ways of combining languages in the input to bilingual children can have distinct consequences for learning. Ultimately, word-learning experiments, beyond answering critical questions regarding bilingual learning, can serve as an effective bridge between laboratory-based work and intervention studies whose goal it is to discover the optimal way of combining languages in the input to bilingual children with communication impairments. The Impact of Traumatic Brain Injury on Binaural Processing in Young and Middle-Age Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Results demonstrate that both age and a positive history of TBI contributed to deficits in suprathreshold binaural processing. Middle-age adults with a history of TBI are at risk for experiencing presenescent deficits in suprathreshold binaural processing deficits, despite having clinically normal hearing.PMID:37732825 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00725

Development of a Sentence Verification Task to Measure Speech Comprehension and Listening Effort in Cochlear Implant Users
CONCLUSIONS: The SVT is an easily implemented test that can assess speech comprehension and listening effort simultaneously. CI users may experience increased effort for comprehending certain talkers' speech, despite showing similar levels of comprehension accuracy.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24126630.PMID:37721457 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00202

Nonverbal Executive Functioning in Relation to Vocabulary and Morphosyntax in Preschool Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: We found evidence for nonverbal EF impairments in preschool children with DLD. Moreover, nonverbal EF and morphosyntactic abilities were significantly related in these children. These findings may have implications for intervention and support the improvement of prognostic accuracy.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24121287.PMID:37713541 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00732

An Investigation of Barriers and Enablers for Genetics in Speech-Language Pathology Explored Through a Case Study of Childhood Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: Results of this qualitative study highlight barriers and enablers to incorporating genetics into speech-language pathology clinical practice. These findings will assist in the development of theory-informed implementation strategies to support SLPs into the future.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24112800.PMID:37713535 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00714

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Hearing Aid Benefit and Satisfaction: Content Validity and Readability
CONCLUSIONS: The categories covered by hearing aid PROMs vary considerably, with no single instrument comprehensively covering all the key ICF components. Future development of hearing aid outcome measures should consider a mixed methodology approach for improved content validity and ensure an appropriate reading level.PMID:37708535 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00535

Children With Developmental Language Disorder Have Lower Quality of Life Than Children With Typical Development and Children With Cochlear Implants
CONCLUSION: DLD is associated with the children's overall QOL, and the degree of reduced QOL relates to the severity of the language impairment.PMID:37708514 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00742
