Chlorthalidone for Poorly Controlled Hypertension in Chronic Kidney Disease: An Interventional Pilot Study.
In conclusion, among people with moderate to advanced CKD with poorly controlled hypertension, chlorthalidone may significantly reduce BP via volume contraction; a randomized trial is needed to define the risks and benefits. Adverse effects may occur within a few weeks and should be carefully monitored. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel. PMID: 24526255 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Awareness of Kidney Disease among US Adults: Findings from the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.
Conclusion: The overall awareness of kidney disease was low in the general population. Efforts are needed to promote the awareness and early detection of kidney disease in public health services and clinical practice. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel. PMID: 24732234 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association Between Chronic Kidney Disease Progression and Cardiovascular Disease: Results from the CRIC Study.
Conclusions: Self-reported heart failure was an independent risk factor for the development of the endpoint of ESRD or 50% decline in GFR in a cohort of patients with chronic kidney disease. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel. PMID: 25401485 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Kidney Measures with Diabetes and Hypertension on Cardiovascular Disease: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.
CONCLUSION: Although individuals with DM and HTN generally had higher cardiovascular risk relative to those without these complications, both low eGFR and high ACR were associated with cardiovascular diseases regardless of the presence or absence of DM and HTN. These findings reinforce the importance of CKD in cardiovascular outcomes. © 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel. PMID: 26139323 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Renal Function and Long-Term Decline in Cognitive Function: The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.
CONCLUSION: In a community-based adult population, declines in renal function independently associated with greater long-term declines in visual memory and verbal memory and learning. © 2015 National Institutes of Health (NIH). Published by S. Karger AG, Basel. PMID: 26201453 [PubMed - in process]

A Risk Score to Guide Cystatin C Testing to Detect Occult-Reduced Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate.
CONCLUSIONS: A risk score using characteristics readily accessible in clinical practice can identify the majority of persons with reduced eGFRcys, which is missed by creatinine. PMID: 26381887 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Intervention Associated Acute Kidney Injury and Long-Term Cardiovascular Outcomes.
CONCLUSION: AKI is associated with long-term CV events after surgery or endovascular intervention. PMID: 26495853 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Oxidative Balance Score and Chronic Kidney Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that higher OBS is associated with lower prevalence of CKD. Lack of association with ESRD incidence in the multivariable analyses indicates that temporal relation between OBS and renal damage remains unclear. PMID: 26569393 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cognitive Impairment in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: The Canadian Frailty Observation and Interventions Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study uncovered a high rate of unrecognized cognitive impairment in an advanced CKD population. This impairment is global, affecting all aspects of cognition and is likely vascular in nature. The longitudinal trajectory of cognitive function and its effect on dialysis decision-making and outcomes deserves further study. PMID: 27798938 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cause-Specific Mortality in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: In a non-dialysis-dependent CKD population, the presence of AF was associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. These data suggest that patients with both CKD and AF are at high cardiovascular risk, and thus clinical practice (or trials) should aim at reducing the overall excess cardiovascular mortality (not stroke alone) in patients with AF and CKD. Cardiovascular Outcomes in African Americans with Sickle Cell Trait and Chronic Kidney Disease.
CONCLUSION: SCT is associated with an increased risk for CAD in African American males with CKD. The excess risk in males with SCT appears to follow the same pattern as risk in males with SCD. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. PMID: 30625463 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of Acute Kidney Injury with Cardiovascular Events and Death in Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Among older adults with hypertension at high cardiovascular risk, intensive treatment of blood pressure independently increased risk of AKI, which substantially raised risks of major cardiovascular events and death. PMID: 30939480 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

GFR-Specific versus GFR-Agnostic Cutoffs for Parathyroid Hormone and Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease.
CONCLUSION: GFR-specific risk-based cutoffs for PTH1-84 and FGF-23 may facilitate more meaningful risk stratification in advanced CKD than current GFR-agnostic reference ranges derived from healthy adults. This may be most applicable in those with severely reduced GFR. PMID: 31238301 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
