Prevalence of markers of atrial cardiomyopathy in embolic stroke of undetermined source: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Electrocardiographic, echocardiographic markers and advanced imaging modalities able to assess the morphologic characteristics of left atrial appendage and left atrial function may be important tools to discriminate AC among ESUS vs NCE stroke patients. Prospective studies exploring the association of potential AC markers with ESUS occurrence are warranted to validate their clinical utility.PMID:35065879 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.01.024

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors for cardiovascular and renal protection: A treatment approach far beyond their glucose-lowering effect
Eur J Intern Med. 2021 Nov 16:S0953-6205(21)00383-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2021.11.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFindings from cardiovascular outcome trials on certain newer glucose-lowering drugs have shown clear cardiovascular and renal benefits. In this review, we provide an updated overview of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors in terms of cardiovascular and renal protection. Both drugs have been described as diabetes/disease-modifying drugs. There is robust evidence on the benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists in renal disease and atherosclerotic c...

Sepsis-driven atrial fibrillation and ischaemic stroke. Is there enough evidence to recommend anticoagulation?
Eur J Intern Med. 2021 Nov 8:S0953-6205(21)00361-7. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2021.10.022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSepsis can lead to cardiac arrhythmias, of which the most common is atrial fibrillation (AF). Sepsis is associated with up to a six-fold higher risk of developing AF, where it occurs most commonly in the first 3 days of hospital admission. In many patients, AF detected during sepsis is the first documented episode of AF, either as an unmasking of sub-clinical AF or as a newly developed arrhythmia. In the short term, sepsis that is complicated by AF leads to longer hospital stays and an increased risk of inpati...
