Endostatin in chronic kidney disease: Associations with inflammation, vascular abnormalities, cardiovascular events and survival.
CONCLUSION: Endostatin levels are independently associated with incident CVE in CKD patients, but show limited prediction abilities for all-cause mortality and CVE above traditional and renal-specific risk factors. PMID: 27394925 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Vitamin K and non-vitamin K antagonists oral anticoagulants for non-valvular atrial fibrillation in real-life.
CONCLUSION: Patients given rivaroxaban and apixaban in clinical practice have a higher thrombotic and hemorrhagic risk in comparison with patients given dabigatran or VKAs. A considerable proportion of patients receive reduced doses of NOACs. PMID: 27394924 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors to treat hypercholesterolemia: Effect on stroke risk.
CONCLUSION: Although a benefit towards reduction of cardiovascular events in the overall has been documented, longer exposure is warranted to be able to evaluate the effect on stroke risk. PMID: 27363304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Daytime sleepiness is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia in rural area of China: A cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: Daytime sleepiness, but not sleep duration abnormity, snoring, apnea and sleep disruption was an independent risk factor for Hhcy. PMID: 27321249 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Influence of age on perioperative major adverse cardiovascular events and mortality risks in elective non-cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSION: The risk of mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events within 30days after surgery increased with advanced age. However, despite advanced age, the absolute event rates appeared to be relatively modest and around 4% for people aged above 90years. PMID: 27306404 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The impact of fever/hyperthermia in the diagnosis of Fabry: A retrospective analysis.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A enzyme, which leads to the accumulation of its substrate, the globotriaosylceramide or Gb3, in many organs and tissues. Main clinical manifestations of FD are neuropathic pain, angiokeratomas, proteinuria and renal failure, left ventricular hypertrophy and stroke. Fever is also a possible symptom at the onset of the disease during childhood and adolescence, but it is frequently misdiagnosed, causing a delay in FD diagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the medical records i...

Ankle brachial index most important to identify polyvascular disease in patients with non-ST elevation or ST-elevation myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: PvD is underdiagnosed in patients suffering from MI, both NSTEMI and STEMI. ABI is a useful and simple measurement that appears predictive of widespread atherosclerosis in these patients. PMID: 26776925 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ischemic stroke outcome: A review of the influence of post-stroke complications within the different scenarios of stroke care.
Abstract Stroke remains one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. The challenge of predicting stroke outcome has been traditionally assessed from a general point of view, where baseline non-modifiable factors such as age or stroke severity are considered the most relevant factors. However, after stroke occurrence, some specific complications such as hemorrhagic transformations or post stroke infections, which lead to a poor outcome, could be developed. An early prediction or identification of these circumstances, based on predictive models including clinical information, could be useful for physici...

Association between ischemic stroke and carbon monoxide poisoning: A population-based retrospective cohort analysis.
CONCLUSION: CO poisoning is associated with a long-term risk of increased incident ischemic stroke. Further study on the mechanism of ischemic stroke for CO poisoning affects is needed. PMID: 26703428 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An investigation of multimorbidity measures as risk factors for pneumonia in elderly frail patients admitted to hospital.
CONCLUSIONS: In a small cohort of elderly frail hospitalized patients, measures of multimorbidity, like CIRS, are significantly associated with the risk of pneumonia. COPD and dementia are the main conditions concurring to define this risk. PMID: 26686926 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Atrial fibrillation, CHA2DS2-VASc score, antithrombotics and risk of non-traffic-, non-cancer-related bone fractures: A population-based cohort study.
CONCLUSION: Patients with AF are more vulnerable to non-traffic-, non-cancer-related bone fractures especially when with specified characteristics. For those with higher CHA2DS2-VASc scores, the use of anticoagulant but not antiplatelet agents could be associated with lower risk of such events. PMID: 26493861 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Patent foramen ovale: Unanswered questions.
Abstract The foramen ovale is a remnant of the fetal circulation that remains patent in 20-25% of the adult population. Although long overlooked as a potential pathway that could produce pathologic conditions, the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been associated with a higher than expected frequency in a variety of clinical syndromes including cryptogenic stroke, migraines, sleep apnea, platypnea-orthodeoxia, deep sea diving associated decompression illness, and high altitude pulmonary edema. A unifying hypothesis is that a chemical or particulate matter from the venous circulation crosses the PFO cond...
