The international St-aging system as a prognostic marker in general senior population: Findings from the EPIDOS cohort study.
In conclusion, community-dwelling older women with abnormal ISS had shorter survival time than the others, suggesting that ISS could be considered as a universal prognostic "aging system" rather than a specific MM "staging system". PMID: 31387843 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation and stroke risk assessment based on telemedicine screening tools in a primary healthcare setting.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the importance of screening for AF in the primary care setting in Brazil and identifies important gaps in the treatment of AF in this population. PMID: 31320151 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Syncope in the German Nationwide inpatient sample - Syncope in atrial fibrillation/flutter is related to pulmonary embolism and is accompanied by higher in-hospital mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: Syncope is a frequent cause for referrals in hospitals. While the overall in-hospital mortality rate is low (<2%), syncope in coprevalence with PE, pneumonia, MI and stroke showed a mortality rate > 8%. Syncope in AF patients had no independent impact on in-hospital mortality. PMID: 30770163 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Handgrip strength, chronic physical conditions and physical multimorbidity in middle-aged and older adults in six low- and middle income countries.
CONCLUSION: Weaker handgrip strength is associated with a range of chronic physical conditions and multimorbidity. Future research should seek to establish the predictive value of this inexpensive measure for clinical use. PMID: 30509483 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The new frontiers of rehabilitation medicine in people with chronic disabling illnesses.
Abstract Because of the demographic shift and the increased proportion of patients surviving acute critical illnesses, the number of people living with severely disabling chronic diseases and, consequently, the demand for rehabilitation are expected to increase sharply over time. As underscored by the World Health Organization, there is substantial evidence that the provision of inpatient rehabilitation in specialized rehabilitation units to people with complex needs is effective in fostering functional recovery, improving health-related quality of life, increasing independence, reducing institutionalization rate,...

Association between heat stroke and ischemic heart disease: A national longitudinal cohort study in Taiwan.
In conclusion, clinicians should be aware about evaluating the IHD risk following a heat stroke episode in a patient. PMID: 30297250 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of incident atrial fibrillation after a prior critical illness: A retrospective cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study explored incident AF among patients with critical illness in their medical history. Patients with septicemia/septic shock were at the highest risk of developing new-onset AF among these critically ill patients. PMID: 30243509 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

National trends in diabetes mellitus hospitalization in Spain 1997-2010: Analysis of over 5.4 millions of admissions.
CONCLUSIONS: Hospitalizations of diabetic patients more than doubled in Spain during the study period. Heart failure and neoplasms experienced the greatest annual increases and remained the principal causes of hospitalization, probably associated with advanced age and comorbidities of hospitalized diabetics. Coronary and cerebrovascular diseases experienced a lower annual increase, suggesting an improvement in cardiovascular care in diabetes in Spain. PMID: 30100217 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular disease risk unmasked by pregnancy complications.
Abstract Pregnancy related complications indicate a propensity for atherosclerotic disease. Epidemiologic data demonstrate early onset cardiovascular disease in women with a history of pregnancy loss, preterm pregnancy or pregnancy complicated by intrauterine growth restriction. Early onset diabetes, increased rates of MI and increased rates of stroke are more prevalent after gestational diabetes. In addition, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy mark significant pathophysiologic changes, including vascular dysfunction and immunologic changes, which induce atherogenesis and result in a substantial increase in rates...

Human serum albumin in cardiovascular diseases.
Abstract Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and oxidative stress are at the forefront in the onset and development of atherosclerosis and many cardiovascular diseases. Epidemiological evidence is that low serum albumin levels are linked to incident ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke and venous thromboembolism, independent of risk factors, body mass index and inflammation. Hypoalbuminemia has also emerged as an independent prognosticator in many cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure...

Newer glomerular filtration rate estimating equations for the full age spectrum based on serum creatinine and cystatin C in predicting mortality in patients with ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with an ischemic stroke, estimated GFR based on serum cystatin (FAScysC and CKD-EPIcysC) was a better predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than estimated GFR based on serum creatinine. PMID: 29429860 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparing associations of different metabolic syndrome definitions with ischemic stroke in Chinese elderly population.
CONCLUSION: In this population, Updated ATPIII criteria was a more suitable definition of Mets than definitions of Chinese guide, IDF and JIS for screening high-risk individuals of ischemic stroke, and the additive effects of Mets components might play a greater role than its composition alone in ischemic stroke. Long-term outcomes in older patients with hyperglycemia on admission for ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: In older patients without DM hospitalized for AIS, elevated ABG is associated with increased long-term mortality. Irrespective of DM status, elevated ABG was associated with increased in-hospital mortality and LOS. PMID: 28974329 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
