Outcomes of tricuspid valve operation at the time of pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis.
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant tricuspid valve operation for regurgitation can be done without increased operative mortality during pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis. Operation appears protective against long-term mortality, residual tricuspid regurgitation, and right ventricular enlargement. PMID: 32896543 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Use of Frailty Scoring to Predict Early Physical Activity Levels Following Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the predictive ability of objective frailty scoring and PA measurement for outcomes after cardiac surgery. This has important implications for surgical risk-stratification and personalized post-operative planning. PMID: 32818541 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Less Invasive Mitral Surgery versus Conventional Sternotomy Stratified by Mitral Pathology.
CONCLUSIONS: LIMS was associated with higher mitral repair rates, and lower morbidity. Further studies regarding the impact of surgeon volume on choice of operative approach are necessary. PMID: 32717233 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Open repair of descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite improvement, open repair of descending thoracic aortic aneurysms and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms continues to be associated with a considerable risk of operative death and perioperative complications. The use of the cerebrospinal fluid drain is associated with better outcomes. PMID: 32504596 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Direct Aortic versus Peripheral Arterial Cannulation in Surgery for Type-A Aortic Dissection.
CONCLUSIONS: In this institutional series, central arterial cannulation allowed a straightforward surgical repair of TAAD and achieved similar early outcomes to those of peripheral arterial cannulation. PMID: 32165179 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Immediate surgery in acute type A dissection and neurologic dysfunction: Fighting the inevitable?
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified an association of preoperative neurologic status and specific stroke patterns after surgical repair of AAD. Irrespectively of timing of surgery and reperfusion strategies, preoperative neurologic dysfunction is strongly associated with impaired neurological outcome. PMID: 32114042 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Five Year Outcomes from the US Pivotal Trial of Valiant Captivia Stent Graft for Blunt Aortic Injury.
CONCLUSIONS: This multicenter clinical trial describes excellent 5-year outcomes and durable exclusion of blunt thoracic aortic injury using a novel stent graft system. TEVAR with this endograft appears to be a safe and effective treatment option for patients with BTAI. PMID: 31991136 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

TAVR After Prior Mitral Valve Surgery: Results from the Transcatheter Valve Therapy Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with prior SMVR undergoing TAVR had similar 30-day outcomes, slightly higher 1-year mortality, and no increase in early PVL compared to those without previous SMVR. Prior SMVR should not preclude TAVR in appropriately selected patients. PMID: 31655043 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Total endovascular repair of the aortic arch: initial experience in the Netherlands.
CONCLUSIONS: Total endovascular aortic arch repair using the Relay Branch device is technically feasible and effective in excluding aortic arch pathology. The observed stroke rate in the initial experience, however, was considerable. Although appealing, this new lesser-invasive technique should be carefully introduced, and its progress thoroughly evaluated. PMID: 31593657 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dissection of Arch Branches Alone an Indication for Aggressive Arch Management in Type A Dissection?
CONCLUSIONS: In ATAAD, dissection of arch branches alone should not be an indication for routine zone 1/2/3 arch replacement; however, zone 1/2/3 arch replacement could be considered to prevent future reoperations in select patients. PMID: 31404544 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Direct Cannulation in Minimally Invasive Cardiac surgery with limited resources.
CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, this approach is a reliable platform for a variety of MICS procedures and has resulted in low complication rates. The technique can be applied safely to both paediatric and adult population. Also, it is very cost effective as regular instruments and cannulas are used. Early Outcomes after Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair with Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest.
CONCLUSIONS: Our extended experience with this technique confirms its safety and effectiveness when used on a routine basis. The rates of spinal cord injury and permanent renal failure are among the lowest reported in the literature. Particularly favorable outcomes were observed in younger patients and those undergoing elective operations. PMID: 31085168 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Open Descending and Thoracoabdominal Aortic Repairs in Patients Younger than 50 Years Old.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients under 50 years old with D/TAAA have low surgical risks and open repairs can be performed with excellent short-term and durable long-term results. Open surgical repairs should be considered initially in younger patients requiring D/TAAA repairs. HTAD warrants closer postoperative surveillance. PMID: 31009630 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Buffalo Trunk Technique for Aortic Arch Reconstruction.
CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of a hybrid approach to the frozen elephant trunk can be attained without the complex industry available technology as presented by our technique, the Buffalo Trunk. Evolution of this approach has facilitated shorter circulatory arrest time, and subsequently overall decreased operative times without compromising outcomes.
