Mechanisms underlying elevated SBP differ with adiposity in young adults: the Enigma study
Objectives: The positive association between adiposity and hypertension is well recognized. However, not all overweight individuals have elevated blood pressure (BP). Moreover, different factors may be associated with high BP in normal-weight versus overweight individuals. The aim of the current study was to examine the influence of adiposity on the relationship between SBP and underlying haemodynamic mechanisms in young adults. Method: Data from 2502 patients were available from the Enigma study. Detailed demographic, biochemical, and haemodynamic data were obtained in all individuals. Data were analysed between lower and...

Increased myocardial vulnerability to ischemia–reperfusion injury in the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy
Objective: Despite its high prevalence among patients suffering myocardial infarction, the significance of left ventricle hypertrophy for infarct size is not known. We asked whether infarct size might be increased by this condition, and whether any such increase might be associated with an increased mitochondrial damage following coronary occlusion. Methods: Occlusion of the left descending artery in isolated, perfused hearts of SHR-SP (spontaneously hypertensive rat stroke-prone) (left ventricular hypertrophy) or Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) (control) rats was used, followed by reperfusion with or without exendin-4 (Exe-4), a gluc...

Prognostic value of longitudinal strain of subepicardial myocardium in patients with hypertension
Conclusion: EpiLS was the only independent prognostic factor in regularly-treated hypertensive patients. Our results indicated that involvement of subepicardial myocardium may infer worse prognosis of hypertensive heart disease.

Estimated carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity has similar predictive value as measured carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity
Conclusion: ePWV predicted major cardiovascular events independently of SCORE, FRS and cfPWV indicating that these traditional risk scores have underestimated the complicated impact of age and blood pressure on arterial stiffness and cardiovascular risk.

A high normal ankle–brachial index combined with a high pulse wave velocity is associated with cerebral microbleeds
Objectives: Arterial stiffness is associated with the pathogenesis of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). The ankle–brachial index (ABI) is used to predict arterial stiffness. We hypothesized that the increase in ABI with age occurs as a result of increasing arterial stiffness and wave reflection, and is thus associated with target organ damage. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between ABI, brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and CMBs. Methods: We recruited 990 cardiovascular disease-free and stroke-free participants [median age 53 (24–86) years, 531 were woman] who underwent brain MRI, ABI...

Associations of blood pressure, sunlight, and vitamin D in community-dwelling adults
Conclusion: We conclude that although 25(OH)D concentration is inversely associated with SBP, it did not explain the association of greater sunlight exposure with lower BP.

Elevated estimated arterial age is associated with metabolic syndrome and low-grade inflammation
Background: Arterial age can be estimated from equations relating arterial stiffness to age and blood pressure in large cohorts. We investigated whether estimated arterial age (eAA) was elevated in patients with the metabolic syndrome and/or known cardiovascular disease (CVD), which factors were associated with eAA and whether eAA added prognostic information. Methods: In 1993, 2366 study participants, 41, 51, 61, and 71 years old, had traditional cardiovascular risk factors and carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) measured. Risk groups were identified based on known CVD and components of metabolic syndrome, Syst...

Cost-utility analysis of physician–pharmacist collaborative intervention for treating hypertension compared with usual care
Conclusion: Team-based care such as a physician–pharmacist collaboration appears to be a cost-effective strategy for treating hypertension. The intervention is most cost-effective for high-risk patients.

Dissecting the genetic components of a quantitative trait locus for blood pressure and renal pathology on rat chromosome 3
Conclusion: This study has identified distinct intervals on RNO3-containing genes that may be important for blood pressure regulation and renal pathology during salt challenge.

Association between MRI-derived hepatic fat fraction and blood pressure in participants without history of cardiovascular disease
Objectives: We assessed whether liver fat content, as determined by MRI, correlates with blood pressure (BP), a major vascular risk factor, in individuals from the general population without history of stroke and coronary or peripheral artery disease. Methods: Cross-sectional data from 384 participants (161 women; aged 39–73 years) of a MRI substudy of the KORA FF4 survey were used. Hepatic fat fraction (HFF) was measured in the left and right lobe of the liver using single voxel multiecho 1H-spectroscopy and at the level of the portal vein using a multiecho Dixon-sequence. Associations of HFF with SBP and DBP as well a...
