Trimethylamine N-Oxide and White Matter Hyperintensity Volume Among Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this observational study, TMAO was associated with cerebral small vessel disease determined by WMHV and acute lacunar infarction. The association was independent of traditional vascular risk factors.PMID:37610752 | PMC:PMC10448304 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.30446

Carotid Plaque Score for Stroke and Cardiovascular Risk Prediction in a Middle-Aged Cohort From the General Population
Conclusions The carotid plaque score is a strong predictor of ischemic stroke and major adverse cardiovascular events, and it provides incremental prognostic information to SCORE2 for risk prediction. A cutoff score of >3 seems to be suitable to discriminate high-risk subjects. Registration Information clinicaltrials.gov. Identifier: NCT01555411.PMID:37609981 | DOI:10.1161/JAHA.123.030739

Vertebrobasilar Artery Calcification as a Risk Factor for the Development of Stroke: Case-Control Study From a Tertiary Care Center, Southern India
Conclusion The presence of higher grades of calcifications in the vertebrobasilar arteries is a major risk factor for stroke. Hence, its presence in asymptomatic individuals needs to be taken as a warning sign for the development of stroke.PMID:37605701 | PMC:PMC10440145 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.42196

Evaluation of Large-Scale Proteomics for Prediction of Cardiovascular Events
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: A protein risk score was significantly associated with ASCVD events in primary and secondary event populations. When added to clinical risk factors, the protein risk score and polygenic risk score both provided statistically significant but modest improvement in discrimination.PMID:37606673 | DOI:10.1001/jama.2023.13258

Association of remnant cholesterol with intracranial atherosclerosis in community-based population: The ARIC study
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of remnant-C were connected to ICAD independent of LDL-C and traditional risk factors. The mechanisms of remnant-C association with ICAD probably offer insight into preventive risk-factor of ischemic stroke.PMID:37604080 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2023.107293

What is the diameter of a fibrin fiber?
CONCLUSION: We performed a systematic, multitechnique survey assessing fibrin fiber diameters under a range of biochemical conditions. The similarity in the diameter values obtained using SEM and superresolution imaging suggests that drying and fixation during SEM sample preparation do not dramatically alter fiber cross-sections. Congruence, under certain conditions, between diameter values obtained using SEM, superresolution fluorescence imaging, and turbidimetry demonstrates the feasibility of a fibrin diameter standardization project.PMID:37601015 | PMC:PMC10439396 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100285

Association between vertebrobasilar artery geometry and vertebrobasilar stenosis, recurrence, and death in posterior circulation stroke and transient ischemic attack
CONCLUSIONS: The geometric characteristics of the VBA are associated with vertebrobasilar stenosis, LAA stroke, 1-year recurrence, and death in posterior circulation stroke and TIA. VBA geometry may be used to stratify the risk of stroke and TIA in the posterior circulation.PMID:37598548 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2023.107306

Sexual dimorphism in peripheral blood cell characteristics linked to recanalization success of endovascular thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke
J Thromb Thrombolysis. 2023 Aug 18. doi: 10.1007/s11239-023-02881-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndovascular thrombectomy (EVT) success to treat acute ischemic stroke varies with factors like stroke etiology and clot composition, which can differ between sexes. We studied if sex-specific blood cell characteristics (BCCs) are related to recanalization success. We analyzed electronic health records of 333 EVT patients from a single intervention center, and extracted 71 BCCs from the Sapphire flow cytometry analyzer. Through Sparse Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis, incorporating cross-validation and stability se...

Effect of Beta-Blocker on Long-Term Major Cardiovascular Events in High Atherosclerotic Risk Population
CONCLUSION: In patients with high atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk, taking beta-blockers had a higher risk of 3P-MACEs. Care should be taken when prescribing beta-blockers to patients without a clear indication.TRIAL REGISTRATION: TCTR20130520001 registered in Thai Clinical Trials Registry (TCTR) https://www.thaiclinicaltrials.org/ , date of registration 20 May 2013.PMID:37594650 | DOI:10.1007/s10557-023-07502-8

The role of macrophage ion channels in the progression of atherosclerosis
Front Immunol. 2023 Jul 31;14:1225178. doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2023.1225178. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a complex inflammatory disease that affects the arteries and can lead to severe complications such as heart attack and stroke. Macrophages, a type of immune cell, play a crucial role in atherosclerosis initiation and progression. Emerging studies revealed that ion channels regulate macrophage activation, polarization, phagocytosis, and cytokine secretion. Moreover, macrophage ion channel dysfunction is implicated in macrophage-derived foam cell formation and atherogenesis. In this context, exploring the regul...
