The Association between Ischemic Stroke Subtype and Stroke Severity: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
DISCUSSION: Embolic stroke was associated with greater stroke severity at the time of the event, and higher risk of death versus thrombotic stroke, even after careful adjustment for patient-level differences.PMID:37414568 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207535

Mitral annular calcification as a predictor of stroke in the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: MAC is an independent predictor of long-term stroke risk in a racially diverse population beyond conventional cardiovascular risk factors and atrial fibrillation.PMID:37409651 | DOI:10.2459/JCM.0000000000001524

A comparative effectiveness study of carotid intervention for long-term stroke prevention in patients with severe asymptomatic stenosis from a large integrated health system
CONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary cohort study of patients with ACS utilizing rigorous analytic methodology, CEA appears to have a small but statistically significant effect on stroke prevention out to 8 years. Further study is needed to appropriately select the subset of patients most likely to benefit from intervention.PMID:37406943 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvs.2023.06.024

Lipoprotein(a): a Case for Universal Screening in Youth
Curr Atheroscler Rep. 2023 Jul 5. doi: 10.1007/s11883-023-01120-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lipoprotein(a) has emerged as a strong independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Targeted screening recommendations for Lp(a) measurement exist for adults and youth known to be at high-risk. However, Lp(a) measurements are not included in universal screening guidelines in the US; hence, most families in the US with high Lp(a) levels who are at risk of future atherosclerotic heart disease, stroke, or aortic stenosis are not recognized. Lp(a) measurement included as part of routine universal lipid scr...

Myasthenia Gravis and Ischemic Stroke: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSION: Bidirectional MR analysis did not provide evidence to support a causal relationship between genetically predicted MG and IS, although observational studies have found such a potential link.PMID:37403387 | DOI:10.2174/1567202620666230703122140

Ultrasound examination of the carotid artery for improved prediction of cardiovascular events and the effect of statin treatment in advanced atherosclerosis : An observational study
CONCLUSION: The prediction of cardiovascular events was better with plaque burden measurements than with the PROCAM score. Treatment with statins in subjects with advanced carotid atherosclerosis (types III-IV b findings on ultrasound) significantly improved the prognosis in a nonrandomized observational study.PMID:37402837 | DOI:10.1007/s00059-023-05197-z

Histopathological characterization of cerebral small vessel disease in epilepsy patients with temporal lobe epilepsy submitted to surgery - a case-control study
CONCLUSION: The present study provided evidence supporting the increased burden of cSVD in the neuropathological samples of patients with chronic epilepsy.PMID:37402214 | DOI:10.1111/ene.15963

The impact of competing stroke etiologies in patients with atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSION: In stroke patients with AF, causes other than cardioembolism as competing etiologies were common in index or recurrent IS. Concomitant presence of large-artery-atherosclerosis seems to indicate an increased risk for recurrences suggesting that stroke preventive means might be more effective if they also address competing stroke etiologies in AF-stroke patients.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03826927.PMID:37401394 | DOI:10.1177/23969873231185220

The appropriateness of the use of statins for the secondary and primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: a cross-sectional study from Jordan
CONCLUSIONS: The use of statins was not in concordance with the guidelines. Many of the patients surveyed were undertreated and adequate follow-up to identify the extent of patients' compliance and response was missing.PMID:37401284 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202306_32785

A Comparative Study of Ultrasmall Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles for Targeting and Imaging Atherosclerotic Plaque
ACS Nano. 2023 Jul 3. doi: 10.1021/acsnano.3c03523. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a complex disease that can lead to life-threatening events, such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Despite the severity of this disease, diagnosing plaque vulnerability remains challenging due to the lack of effective diagnostic tools. Conventional diagnostic protocols lack specificity and fail to predict the type of atherosclerotic lesion and the risk of plaque rupture. To address this issue, technologies are emerging, such as noninvasive medical imaging of atherosclerotic plaque with customized nanotechnologic...

White Matter Cerebrovascular Reactivity: Effects of Microangiopathy and Proximal Occlusions on the Dynamic BOLD Response
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest additive effects of microvascular and macrovascular disease upon white matter CVR, but with greater overall effects relating to macrovascular SOD than to apparent microangiopathy. Dynamic ACZ-BOLD presents a promising path towards a quantitative stroke risk imaging biomarker.BACKGROUND: Cerebral white matter (WM) microangiopathy manifests as sporadic or sometimes confluent high intensity lesions in MR imaging with T2-weighting, and bears known associations with stroke, cognitive disability, depression and other neurological disorders 1-5 . Deep white matter is particularly susceptible to isc...

Rescue therapy after thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion due to underlying atherosclerosis: review of literature
Front Neurol. 2023 Jun 16;14:1181295. doi: 10.3389/fneur.2023.1181295. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIn this review article, we summarized the current advances in rescue management for reperfusion therapy of acute ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion due to underlying intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS). It is estimated that 24-47% of patients with acute vertebrobasilar artery occlusion have underlying ICAS and superimposed in situ thrombosis. These patients have been found to have longer procedure times, lower recanalization rates, higher rates of reocclusion and lower rates of favorable outcomes than patients ...
