The Sky's the Limit: Expanding Nursing's Contribution to Acute Stroke Science
Am J Crit Care. 2022 Jul 1;31(4):266-274. doi: 10.4037/ajcc2022109.ABSTRACTStroke is the number one cause of preventable disability in adults in the United States. Significant advances have occurred in medications and technology supporting rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment during the past 30 years, along with blurring of the lines of what traditionally constituted nursing or medical research. Ischemic stroke is a disease of vascular insufficiency that mirrors myocardial infarction more than any other neurologic diagnosis. My primary program of research is focused on exploration of methods to improve intracranial blood f...

Evaluation of Mean Platelet Volume and Platelet Count in Ischemic stroke and its subtypes: Focus on degree of disability and thrombus formation
Conclusions: Elevated MPV is an independent risk factor for Ischemic stroke along with hypertension. In addition, higher MPV associated significantly with stroke disability as well.PMID:36028984 | DOI:10.1080/00207454.2022.2118599

Molecular mechanisms for the prevention and promoting the recovery from ischemic stroke by nutraceutical laminarin: A comparative transcriptomic approach
Front Nutr. 2022 Aug 24;9:999426. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2022.999426. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTStroke is the second leading cause of death and a major cause of disability worldwide. Ischemic stroke caused by atherosclerosis accounts for approximately 87% of all stroke cases. Ischemic stroke is a preventable disease; therefore, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis and recovery processes could provide therapeutic targets for drug development and reduce the associated mortality rate. Laminarin, a polysaccharide, is a nutraceutical that can be found in brown algae. Accumulating evidence sug...

Triglyceride-glucose index and the incidence of stroke: A meta-analysis of cohort studies
CONCLUSION: A higher TyG index may be independently associated with a higher risk of stroke in individuals without stroke at baseline. The aforementioned findings need to be verified by a large-scale prospective cohort study to further clarify the underlying pathophysiological mechanism between the TyG index and stroke.PMID:36686534 | PMC:PMC9845890 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.1033385

Association of periodontitis and gingivitis with stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review indicated a significant association between stroke and periodontal disease in case-control, cohort and cross-sectional studies. The findings need to be further substantiated in prospective cohort studies with an optimal sample size.PMID:36700798 | DOI:10.17219/dmp/158793

Stroke phenotype in cannabis users among young adults with ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: We found a significant, independent and graded association of cannabis use with the atherosclerotic stroke phenotype.PMID:37010779 | DOI:10.1111/ene.15799

Triglyceride-glucose index, symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis and recurrence risk in minor stroke patients with hypertension
CONCLUSION: TyG is a significant risk factor for sICAS in hypertensive patients, and there is a synergistic effect of sICAS and higher TyG on ischemic stroke recurrence.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: The study was registered on 16 August 2019 at https://www.chictr.org.cn/showprojen.aspx?proj=41160 (No. ChiCTR1900025214).PMID:37076850 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01823-6

Co-existing intracranial and extracranial carotid atherosclerosis predicts large-artery atherosclerosis stroke recurrence: a single-center prospective study utilizing combined head-and-neck vessel wall imaging
CONCLUSION: Co-existing intracranial HST1 and extracranial carotid atherosclerosis independently predicted LAA stroke recurrence. Combined head-and-neck HR-VWI is a promising technique for atherosclerosis imaging.CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: This prospective study using combined head-and-neck HR-VWI highlighted the necessity of both intracranial culprit plaque evaluation and multi-vascular bed assessment, adding value to the prediction of stroke recurrence.KEY POINTS: • This study highlighted the necessity of both intracranial culprit plaque evaluation and multi-vascular bed assessment, adding value to the prediction of...

Increased plasma levels of circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 are associated with stroke injury
Ann Clin Transl Neurol. 2023 Jun 23. doi: 10.1002/acn3.51837. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Accumulating studies have shown that circulating circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent novel biomarkers for many human diseases. We investigated whether plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels are associated with stroke severity, infarct volume, stroke etiology, and functional outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.METHODS: We applied quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to measure plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels of 236 AIS patients within 72 h of symptoms onset and 136 healthy controls. We further assessed the Nat...

Predictive utility of stress tests in the detection of asymptomatic coronary artery disease in atherosclerotic stroke patients
CONCLUSION: Myocardial ischemia and CV events were infrequent and both strongly associated with ECG signs of necrosis, suggesting a low yield of stress tests and the potential for a more straightforward algorithm in the choice of patients eligible to coronary angiogram or other coronary imaging in post-stroke setting.PMID:37567133 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2023.107290
