Neurological Perspectives of Neurogenic Pulmonary Edema
Background: Neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) is characterized by acute respiratory distress triggered by acute, severe compromise of the central nervous system (CNS). This review aims at summarizing and discussing recent and previous findings about the type and frequency of CNS triggers of NPE, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of patients experiencing NPE.Key Messages: NPE is diagnosed in the presence of pink, frothy sputum, pulmonary edema, bilateral opacities on X-ray, PaO2:PiO2 #x3c;200 mm Hg, acute CNS compromise with increased intra-cranial pressure, rapid resolution within 48 –72 h, and the absence o...

Loss of GFAP and Vimentin Does Not Affect Peri-Infarct Depolarizations after Focal Cerebral Ischemia
In conclusion, the 4-wavelength OIS system allows acquisition of high temporal-spatial resolution color images for analyzing temporal-spatial characteristics of PIDs in detail. GFAP and Vim in astrocytes are not involved in PIDs after MCAO in mice.Eur Neurol

Evaluation of Clinical Features and Stroke Etiology in Patients with Bilateral Middle Cerebellar Peduncle Infarction
Conclusion: BMCPI is a rare cerebrovascular disease characterized by vertigo, ataxia, and dysarthria, which may also be accompanied by a hearing deficit or clinical signs of brainstem damage. BMCPI may be associated with hypoperfusion secondary to occlusive disease of the bilateral VA or proximal basilar artery.Eur Neurol

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Comprehensive Review
Conclusion: CSVT is a potentially fatal neurological condition that is often under-diagnosed due to its nonspecific presentation. Timely diagnosis and treatment can reduce morbidity and mortality, remarkably improving the outcome in affected individuals.Eur Neurol

PREvention of VENous Thromboembolism in Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients – PREVENTIHS Study: A Randomized Controlled Trial and a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: In patients with acute ICH, the use of anticoagulants to prevent VTE was safe but the overall level of evidence was low due to the low number of patients included in randomized clinical trials.Eur Neurol

Antiplatelet Therapy after Intracerebral Hemorrhage and Subsequent Clinical Events: A 12-Year South Korean Cohort Study
Conclusion: Using antiplatelet treatment after ICH does not increase chances of recurrence, but lowers the occurrence of subsequent clinical events, especially mortality. However, the prescription and resumption rate of antiplatelet therapy after ICH remains low in South Korea.Eur Neurol

The Novel microRNA Rno-miR-686-3p Is Associated with the Ischaemic Penumbra
Conclusion: rno-miR-686-3p is a novel miRNA associated with the ischaemic penumbra that is implicated in transcriptional regulation and modulation of the Wnt and cAMP signalling pathways. Furthermore, it may serve as a possible new biomarker with potential value for detecting the existence of the penumbra.Eur Neurol

Effects of Direct Oral Anticoagulants ’ Nonrecommended Dose in Atrial Fibrillation: A Meta-Analysis
Background: The efficacy and safety profiles of nonrecommended direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) doses in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) are still undefined.Summary: We searched for randomized controlled trials and observational studies that compared nonrecommended versus recommended doses of DOACs, published up to December 2021. Primary study outcomes were ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack/systemic embolism (IS/TIA/SE) and major bleeding (MB). All-cause mortality was a secondary outcome. We determined pooled odds ratios (ORs) between groups of patients with a random-effect model. Twenty-three ...

Close your eyes and see – stroke sequelae versus functional neurological disorder in a physician
The first author was a left-handed, 51-year-old nephrologist who experienced a neurologic event. She underwent neurosurgery complicated by hemorrhage. Post-operatively, she developed persistent vertigo and unilateral tongue pain which persisted for over five years. Early neuroimaging revealed expected encephalomalacia but no neuroanatomical basis for my symptoms. A functional neurological disorder was suspected, and she was seen by several psychiatrists and psychotherapists. However, she suspected a neuroanatomical lesion would better explain her unrelenting symptoms. After seeing many neurologists, a neuroanatomical diagn...
