Dose-Dependent Association of Inflammatory Cytokines with Carotid Atherosclerosis in Transient Ischaemic Attack: Implications for Clinical Trials
Conclusion: Symptomatic carotid atherosclerosis was associated with elevated cytokines in TIA patients after controlling for other sources of inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP was associated with recurrent ischaemic stroke at 90 days. These findings implicate acute plaque inflammation in the pathogenesis of cerebral thromboembolism and support a rationale for randomized trials of anti-inflammatory therapy for stroke patients, who were excluded from coronary trials.Cerebrovasc Dis

Community Intent to Activate Emergency Medical Services May Be Associated with Regional tPA Treatment
Conclusions: There was little regional variation in intent to call EMS and stroke symptom recognition. Intent to call EMS and stroke symptom recognition are modest contributors to regional variation in tPA treatment.Cerebrovasc Dis

Seasonal Variation in Incidence of Stroke in a General Population of 1.4 Million Japanese: The Shiga Stroke Registry
Conclusion: In the present large-scale stroke registry of general population, incidence rates of stroke were highest in winter and lowest in summer in current Japan.Cerebrovasc Dis

The Association between Baseline and 3-Month Albuminuria and 1-Year Prognosis of Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions: Changes in albuminuria can predict adverse 1-year outcomes in Chinese ischemic stroke patients. In particular, persistent albuminuria was independently associated with 1-year all-cause death, stroke recurrence, and poor functional outcome.Cerebrovasc Dis

Both Ends of Values in the Hemoglobin Spectrum Are Associated with Adverse Stroke Outcomes
Conclusions: Our study found both low and high hemoglobin values were associated with adverse stroke outcomes including all-cause mortality, stroke recurrence, combined endpoint, and stroke disability, which showed a U-shaped association. And, significant interactions between sex and hemoglobin concentration on all-cause mortality and stroke recurrence were also identified.Cerebrovasc Dis

Contemporary Trends in the Treatment of Mild Ischemic Stroke with Intravenous Thrombolysis: Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program
Conclusion: There was an increased trend in IVT utilization among AIS patients presenting with mild symptoms. Utilization of IVT increased the odds of being discharged to home and the ability to ambulate at discharge independently in patients with mild stroke.Cerebrovasc Dis

Treat COVID-19, but Not Only COVID-19: Stroke Matters as Well
Conclusion: Even with a low burden of COVID-19 during the first wave and no change in organization and logistics of stroke services, stroke admissions and volume of recanalization treatments decreased. Public health communication campaigns should encourage people to seek emergency medical care for stroke symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.Cerebrovasc Dis

Association between Stroke Quality Assessments and Mortality within 30 Days among Patients Who Underwent Hemorrhagic Stroke Surgeries in South Korea
Conclusions: The study identified a significant relationship between stroke quality assessments and 30-day mortality. Healthcare organizations without stroke quality assessments may exhibit a comparatively higher risk of mortality. Future interventions to minimize mortality and provide evidence for policymakers and healthcare leaders could involve expanding the scope of stroke quality assessment.Cerebrovasc Dis

Workflow Times and Outcome of Endovascular Therapy in Stroke Patients with Initial MRI or CT
Conclusion: In LVO stroke patients undergoing ET, pretreatment imaging with MRI instead of CT leads to a delay of imaging acquisition after hospital admission without having a measurable impact on consecutive workflow steps and clinical outcome.Cerebrovasc Dis

Relationship between Chronic Kidney Disease, Time-in-Therapeutic Range, and Adverse Outcomes in Atrial Fibrillation: A post hoc Analysis from the AMADEUS Trial
Conclusion: Deteriorated renal function has a small negative impact on the quality of anticoagulation control with VKA which is linked to poor outcomes in AF. However, moderate renal failure itself was an independent risk factor for increased risk of stroke, major bleeding, and all-cause mortality amongst patients with AF.Cerebrovasc Dis

Evolution of Evidence-Based Medicine in Stroke
The introduction and evolution of evidence-based stroke medicine has realized major advances in our knowledge about stroke, methods of medical research, and patient outcomes that continue to complement traditional individual patient care. It is humbling to recall the state of knowledge and scientific endeavour of our forebears who were unaware of what we know now and yet pursued the highest standards for evaluating and delivering effective stroke care. The science of stroke medicine has evolved from pathophysiological theory to empirical testing. Progress has been steady, despite inevitable disappointments and cul-de-sacs,...

Association of Admission NIHSS Score with Infarct Core Volume and Target Mismatch of Infarct Core/Penumbra Volume on CT Perfusion in Acute Ischaemic Stroke

Beyond Functional Impairment: Redefining Favorable Outcome in Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Conclusion: Established stroke scores mainly focusing on functional outcomes do poorly reflect the high rate of subjective impairments reported in SAH survivors, specifically in those achieving good functional outcome. Further studies are needed to investigate whether psychoeducational approaches aiming at improving coping mechanisms and perceived self-efficacy may result in higher subjective health in these patients.Cerebrovasc Dis

Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery Hyperintense Ischemic Stroke Predicts Less Favorable 90-Day Outcome after Intravenous Thrombolysis
Conclusions: Early development of stroke lesion on FLAIR within 4.5 h of onset is associated with reduced likelihood of favorable 90-day outcome after IV thrombolysis.Cerebrovasc Dis
