New-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with worsening heart failure and coronary artery disease: an analysis from the COMMANDER-HF trial
ConclusionsA well-calibrated risk-score identified patients at risk of new-onset AF in the COMMANDER-HF trial. Patients who developed AF had a higher risk of subsequent death.Graphic abstractRisk of new-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with HFrEF and coronary artery disease

Catheter ablation of supraventricular tachycardia in patients with and without structural heart disease: insights from the German ablation registry
ConclusionPatients with and without SHD undergoing SVT ablation exhibit similar success rates and low major complication rates, despite disadvantageous baseline characteristics in SHD patients. These data highlight the safety and efficacy of SVT ablation in patients with and without SHD. Nevertheless Kaplan –Meier mortality estimates at 1 year demonstrate a significant mortality increase in patients with SHD, highlighting the importance of treating the underlying condition and reliable anticoagulation if indicated.

Large extracellular vesicles in the left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation —the missing link?
AbstractAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmic disease in humans, which leads to thrombus formation in the left atrial appendage and stroke through peripheral embolization. Depending on their origin, large extracellular vesicles (lEVs) can exert pro-coagulant functions. In the present study, we investigated how different types of AF influence the levels of large EV subtypes in three distinct atrial localizations. Blood samples were collected from the right and left atrium and the left atrial appendage of 58 patients. 49% of the patients had permanent AF, 34% had non-permanent AF, and 17% had no history of...

Impact of atrial fibrillation pattern on outcomes after left atrial appendage closure: lessons from the prospective LAARGE registry
ConclusionAtrial fibrillation type did not impair periprocedural safety or in-hospital MACE patients undergoing LAAC. However, after one year, NPAF was associated with higher mortality.Graphic abstract

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathies requiring more monitoring for less atrial fibrillation-related complications: a clustering analysis based on the French registry on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (REMY)
ConclusionBased on a clustering analysis, three phenogroups of HCM according to the risk of AF occurrence can be identified. It can indicate which patients should be more monitored and/or treated, particular to prevent the risk of stroke.Graphic abstract

Thirty-day incidence of stroke after transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation: meta-analysis and mixt-treatment comparison of self-expandable versus balloon-expandable valve prostheses
ConclusionOur analysis indicates higher 30-day stroke incidence after transfemoral TAVI with BEV compared to SEV. We could not find evidence for superiority of a specific valve system. More randomized controlled trials with head-to-head comparison of SEV and BEV are needed to address this open question.Graphic abstract

Influence of sex, age and race on coronary and heart failure events in patients with diabetes and post-acute coronary syndrome
ConclusionsOlder adults, women and non-White patients with diabetes who are post-ACS are often underrepresented in RCTs. The risk for HF events was higher in older and non-White patients, with a trend towards significance in women, whereas only non-White patients (and not women and older patients) were at higher risk for MACE. Future trials should enrich enrollment of these persons at risk.Graphic abstract

Echocardiographic diagnosis of atrial cardiomyopathy allows outcome prediction following pulmonary vein isolation
ConclusionThe echocardiographic parameters LA-EF and LAS allow accurate, non-invasive diagnosis of ACM and prediction of arrhythmia recurrence after PVI.Graphic abstract

Physical activity, sedentary behavior and risk of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionsThese results do not support a causal relationship between PA and sedentary behavior with risk of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke. Hence, previous observational studies may have been biased.Graphic abstract

Continuation or discontinuation of oral anticoagulants after HAS-BLED scores increase in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsFor patients whose HAS-BLED scores increased to  ≥ 3, the continuation of OACs was associated with better clinical outcomes. An increased HAS-BLED score in anticoagulated AF patients may not be the only reason to withhold OACs, but reminds physicians to correct modifiable bleeding risk factors and follow up patients more closely.Graphical abstractAssociations between Continuation or Discontinuation of Oral Anticoagulants and Risks of Clinical Outcomes after HAS-BLED Scores IncreasedAF atrial fibrillation;aHR adjusted hazard ratio;ICH intra-cranial hemorrhage;OACs oral anticoagulants

Heart failure re-hospitalizations and subsequent fatal events in coronary artery disease: insights from COMMANDER-HF, EPHESUS, and EXAMINE
ConclusionsA first or recurrent HFH is common in patients with CAD and AMI or HFrEF and indicates a poor prognosis. Preventing the development of heart failure after AMI and control of congestion in patients with CAD and HFrEF are key unmet needs and therapeutic targets.RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01877915. Heart failure and atrial fibrillation in patients with an interatrial shunt
ConclusionIn patients with interatrial shunt, the risk of AF and HF was lower. Interatrial shunt may be beneficial, and the closure of an interatrial shunt should be performed only in carefully selected patients.Graphic abstractAn interatrial shunt can unload the left atrium. In patients with stroke or TIA, the presence of an interatrial shunt was associated with a reduced risk for new-onset HF and AF.AF atrial fibrillation,HF heart failure,HR hazard ratio,LA left atrium

Ten-year all-cause death following percutaneous or surgical revascularization in patients with prior cerebrovascular disease: insights from the SYNTAX Extended Survival study
ConclusionPrior CEVD was associated with a significantly increased risk of 10  year all-cause death which was similar in patients treated with PCI or CABG. These results do not support preferential referral for PCI rather than CABG in patients with prior CEVD.Trial registration: SYNTAX: ClinicalTrials.gov reference: NCT00114972. Outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction and new atrial fibrillation: a nationwide analysis
ConclusionsIn a large and systematic nationwide analysis, AF first recorded in the first 30  days after AMI was independently associated with higher risks of death and ischemic stroke than those in patients with no AF or previously known AF.Graphic abstract
