Patient, carer and public involvement in major system change in acute stroke services: The construction of value
DiscussionInvolvement was seen to have strategic and intrinsic value. Its strategic value lay in facilitating the implementation of a model of care that aimed to deliver evidence‐based care to all; its intrinsic value was in the idea of citizen participation in change processes as an end in its own right. The concept of value, rather than impact, may provide greater traction in analyses of contemporary involvement practices.

Regenerative medicine: Stroke survivor and carer views and motivations towards a proposed stem cell clinical trial using placebo neurosurgery
ConclusionStroke survivor views and motivations reflect anticipation of the personal and future benefits of regenerative medicine. Partners/carers sought to balance the value of stroke survivor hope with carrying the weight of hope as carer, a conflict burden adding to known caregiver burden. All participants expressed the need for during and post‐trial psychological support. This study provides a rare opportunity to explore the prospective views and motivations of stroke survivors and their partners/carers towards a proposed Phase III 2‐arm RCT. This adds weight to qualitative evidence exploring capacity, consent, dec...

Development of a patient‐centred, patient‐reported outcome measure (PROM) for post‐stroke cognitive rehabilitation: qualitative interviews with stroke survivors to inform design and content
ConclusionsThe results support the development of a PROM specifically designed to address the impact of cognitive problems. It should: include items addressing a comprehensive range of cognitive skills; ask questions about mood, self‐identity and social participation; use accessible wording that respondents understand and endorse; measure impact rather than frequency; and explore perceived impact on carers.

Patient engagement with research: European population register study
ConclusionsAcross Europe, stroke survivors already participating in research appear ill informed about stroke research. Researchers, healthcare professionals and patient associations need to improve how research results are communicated to patient populations and research participants, and to raise awareness of the relationship between research evidence and increased quality of care.

‘It was like he was in the room with us’: patients’ and carers’ perspectives of telemedicine in acute stroke
ConclusionAlthough telemedicine was well accepted by many participants, its use added an additional layer of complexity to the acute stroke consultation. The ‘remote’ nature of the consultation posed challenges for some patients. These issues may be ameliorated by clear information for patients and carers, staff interpersonal skills, and teamworking.

What aspects of rehabilitation provision contribute to self‐reported met needs for rehabilitation one year after stroke – amount, place, operator or timing?
ConclusionFor people with moderate/severe stroke, continuity in rehabilitation (preferably physiotherapy) during the first year after stroke seems to be associated with self‐reported met needs for rehabilitation.
