'We found that the ReStore provided targeted assistance for plantarflexion and dorsiflexion of the paretic ankle, improving the gait pattern,' explained Dr. Nolan, senior research scientist in the Center for Mobility and Rehabilitation Engineering Research at Kessler Foundation. 'This is an important first step toward expanding options for rehabilitative care for the millions of individuals with mobility impairments caused by ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.'

First non-human primate study showing promise of gene therapy for stroke repair

A research team led by Prof. Gong Chen at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China recently reported the first non-human primate study demonstrating successful in vivo neural regeneration from brain internal glial cells for stroke repair. This work was published on Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology on November 5th, 2020.

Stroke risk higher than expected among COVID-19 patients
(American Heart Association) Analysis of data from the American Heart Association's COVID-19 CVD Registry of more than 20,000 U.S. adults hospitalized with COVID-19 through November 2020 found that, overall, COVID-19 patients had an increased risk of stroke compared with patients who had influenza or sepsis.COVID-19 patients with ischemic stroke were more likely to be older, male, Black race or have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or an irregular heartbeat.

More stroke patients receiving mechanical clot removal, yet racial disparities persist
(American Heart Association) Mechanical removal of blood clots for stroke (endovascular treatment) has become more prevalent, however, racial differences in receiving the treatment persist.Black patients receive endovascular treatment less often than non-Hispanic white patients.In addition, Black and Asian patients treated with clot-removal therapy were less likely than non-Hispanic white patients to be able to perform the tasks of daily living three months after a stroke.

Stroke rate 4 times higher in Black adults than whites
(Kaiser Permanente) Black middle-aged adults had an incidence rate of stroke 4 times higher than that of white middle-aged adults, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published March 29 in Hypertension.The large national prospective study highlights the need to raise awareness among young and middle-aged Black adults about the impact of high blood pressure, called hypertension, on stroke, the research team said.
