Experimental therapy could boost stroke recovery
(University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine& Dentistry) An experimental therapy that targets the spinal cord may one day be key to spurring on enhanced recovery for stroke victims. By injecting a drug called chondroitinase ABC (ChABC) into the spinal cord of rats 28 days after they suffered a stroke, UAlberta researchers found they were able to enhance recovery by inducing amplified rewiring of circuits connecting the brain to the spinal cord. When they also combined the spinal therapy with rehabilitative training, recovery amplified further.

Canadian stroke victims at higher risk of dying in rural hospitals
(Universit é Laval) Canadians who suffer a stroke have a higher risk of dying if they are treated in a rural hospital rather than an urban one. According to a new study published in PLOS One by Universit é Laval researchers, the mortality rate in the months that follow a stroke is approximately 25 percent higher for patients treated in rural areas.

MRI stroke data set released by USC research team
(University of Southern California) A USC-led team has compiled, archived and shared one of the largest open-source data sets of brain scans from stroke patients. The data set, known as ATLAS, is available for download. Researchers globally are using the scans to develop and test algorithms that can automatically process MRI images from stroke patients. In the long run, scientists hope to identify biological markers that forecast which patients will respond to various rehabilitation therapies and personalize treatment plans.

Stroke researchers confirm role of frontal lesions in response to prism treatment
(Kessler Foundation) 'Our research shows that patients with frontal cortical lesions may benefit from prism adaptation treatment for spatial neglect,' said Dr. AM Barrett. 'Early identification of patients with hemiparesis and frontal lesions could reduce the substantial costs of stroke care and improve public health. Because spatial neglect often goes undetected, this is a major challenge. Meeting that challenge requires educating stroke professionals about targeted prism treatment, and conducting further research on a larger scale.'
