Ischemic stroke revealing COVID-19 infection: Case report
CONCLUSION: SARS-COV 2 infection can spread from the respiratory system to the central nervous system, resulting in an inflammatory response and excessive secretion of inflammatory markers, leading to ischemic stroke.PMID:34631044 | PMC:PMC8492013 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102912

Frequency of cardioversions as an additional risk factor for stroke in atrial fibrillation - the FinCV-4 study
CONCLUSIONS: Frequency of CVs for symptomatic AF episodes provides additional information on stroke risk in AF patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score 1.Key messagesThis retrospective study offers a unique opportunity to observe the natural course of AF patients with infrequent episodes of clinical arrhythmia when they were not using OAC (before introduction of CHA2DS2-VASc score).Stroke or systemic embolism rate was very low (0.08 per 100 patient-years) in patients with one CHA2DS2-VASc point who visited the emergency room for cardioversion less than once a year.Frequency of cardioversions can be used for additional risk stratif...

ECG markers associated with ischemic stroke at young age - A case-control study.
CONCLUSIONS: P-wave abnormalities on ECG were associated with cardioembolic but also with cryptogenic subtype of IS. PMID: 28657357 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Plasma Klotho concentrations predict functional outcome at three months after acute ischemic stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased plasma Klotho concentrations were associated with good functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We attribute these associations to the pleiotropic effects of Klotho in stroke and vascular diseases. Key message Increased plasma Klotho concentrations were associated with good functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 31070492 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An opportunity to improve Acute Ischemic Stroke care in the South Asian region through telestroke services
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2021 Nov 25;72:103115. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2021.103115. eCollection 2021 Dec.ABSTRACTThe South Asian region accounts for more than 40% of the stroke burden of the developing world and is the highest contributor to global stroke mortality. Despite proven treatment guidelines, the limited number of neurologists, the number of dedicated stroke centers and the fact that most of these facilities are urban-centric renders poor access to thrombolysis in this region, especially in the rural areas. Studies have shown that thrombolysis using telestroke services are comparable to face-to-face thrombolysis. Telest...

Role of female community health volunteers in ischemic stroke prevention, identification, referral and rehabilitation in Nepal
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2021 Oct 8;72:102893. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102893. eCollection 2021 Dec.ABSTRACTFor the past three decades, female community health volunteers (FCHVs) have been at the forefront of Nepal's health map and have contributed significantly to its improving health indicators such as maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate. Given the changing epidemiology of Nepal and the shift of burden from communicable to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), it is important to revitalize their role with the changing times. The prevalence of ischemic stroke in Nepal is on the rise. However, very few people make i...

Moyamoya syndrome and stroke among pediatric sickle cell disease patients in Sudan: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stroke is a common problem in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease, with a very high frequency of Moyamoya vasculopathy among patients with stroke presentation. The burden of Moyamoya syndrome in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease is underestimated due to the cost of the available screening and diagnostic tools.PMID:35734737 | PMC:PMC9206931 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103815

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes syndrome: a case report from Nepal
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2023 May 3;85(6):3026-3030. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000000712. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTMitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like syndrome (MELAS) is a rare neurodegenerative inherited disorder that is characterized by stroke-like episodes, seizures, endocrine, and multiple system involvement. It is important to consider it as a differential diagnosis in a young patient with stroke-like episodes as it is progressive and has multiple complications.CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old male presented with slurring of speech and drowsiness for 7 h. He was a diagnosed case of type 2 ...
