The evaluation of new biomarkers in a case of MELAS
The aim of our study is to evaluate the utility of new biomarkers, FGF-21 and GDF-15, as well as to confirm the efficacy of L-arginine and sodium pyruvate administration in a patient with mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). The patient was 60 years old women with mtT3271C mutation who developed abrupt onset of aphasia and stroke-like episodes. Muscle pathology and laboratory findings were compatible with MELAS. She was treated with L-arginine and sodium pyruvates, but her condition got worsen and died in 2 years.

Intra-cerebral cannabidiol infusion-induced neuroprotection is partly associated with the TNF- α/TNFR1/NF-кB pathway in transient focal cerebral ischaemia.
CONCLUSION: The results achieved in this study support the idea that CBD has a cerebroprotective effect (partly through suppression of TNF-α, TNFR1, and NF-кB) on ischaemic injury. ABBREVIATIONS: CBD, cannabidiol; ANOVA, analysis of variance; PVDF, polyvinylidene difluoride; SDS-PAGE, sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; SEM, standard error of mean. Influence of sodium consumption and associated knowledge on poststroke hypertension in Uganda
Conclusions: High urine sodium and high salt-diet preferences were more frequent among poststroke hypertensive patients in Uganda than in their nonhypertensive counterparts. There was, however, no difference in dietary salt knowledge between these groups. The development of educational strategies that include salt-diet preferences may lead to better blood pressure control in this high-risk population.
