Predictors of 30-day mortality after endovascular mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionWe observed a moderate rate of 30-day mortality after EMT at an academic CSC. Older age, higher baseline NIHSS score, higher NIHSS score at 24 h after thrombectomy, and lower rates of successful revascularization were predictive of 30-day mortality in univariate analysis. Further efforts to identify modifiable risk factors of mortality are warranted.

Impact of putamen stroke on task context updating: Evidence from P300 brain waves
Publication date: Available online 1 August 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Li-Chuan Hsu, Sui-Foon Lo, Chia-Yao Lin, Fen-Fen Chen, Yu-Chien Lo, Li-Wei Chou, Chih-Lan Kuo, Yi-Min TienAbstractAccording to the context updating theory, the oddball P300 component indexes brain activities underlying revision of the mental representation induced by incoming stimuli. It involves an attention-driven comparison process that evaluates the representation of the previous event in working memory. Delayed latencies have been reported for various types of stroke such as unilateral thalamic stroke. We investigated me...

Aortic valve calcification and risk of stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 21 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Danfeng Zhang, Xianliang Dai, Chaoqun Wang, Kaiwei Han, Junyu Wang, Yan Dong, Jigang Chen, Lijun HouAbstractAortic valve calcification (AVC) is common among aged population and reported to be associated with the risk of stroke. However, the conclusions are inconsistent among studies. We performed a rigorous meta-analysis to unravel the AVC-stroke relationship. Embase, PubMed and Cochrane library were retrieved for related cohort studies investigating the correlations between AVC and risk of stroke. The language was limited to ...

Endothelial progenitor cells improve functional recovery in focal cerebral ischemia of rat by promoting angiogenesis via VEGF
Publication date: Available online 21 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Zhaohong Kong, Yan Hong, Jiang Zhu, Xin Cheng, Yumin LiuAbstractTo investigate the role of venous infusion of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in the reendothelialization of acute focal cerebral ischemia model in rats. And explore the mechanism of VEGF to promote angiogenesis of functional recovery in focal cerebral ischemia of rat. A model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) was used to mimic ischemia following EPCs extraction from the same donor rats. EPCs were characterized by CD34, CD45 and CD133 expressions, and...

Survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest among cerebrovascular disease patients
Publication date: August 2018Source: Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 54Author(s): Corey R. Fehnel, Alissa Trepman, Dale Steele, Muhib A. Khan, Brian Silver, Susan L. MitchellAbstractStroke is a leading cause of death and disability, and while preferences for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are frequently discussed, there is limited evidence detailing outcomes after CPR among acute cerebrovascular neurology (inclusive of stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)) patients. Systematic review and meta-analysis of PubMed and Cochrane libraries from January 1990 to December 2016 was conducted among stroke patients unde...

Acute ischemic dissection of an “S”-shaped carotid artery: The “one-stop” value of using a detachable Solitaire AB stent
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endovascular repair using detachable Solitaire AB stents for acute ischemic dissection of “S”-shaped carotid arteries. From May 2015 to December 2016, a total of 127 patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) underwent endovascular treatment in our center. Among them, five AISs were due to acute dissection of an “S”-shaped carotid artery. Coexisting carotid embolism was identified in all five patients, who first underwent successful Solitaire AB stent-based retrieval of the embolism. All patients then underwent Solitaire AB stenting to reopen the occluded carot...

Han, Olivia Sobczyk, James Duffin, Danny M. Mandell, Michael Tymianski, Joseph A. Fisher, David J. Mikulis, Lashmi VenkatraghavanAbstractThe purpose of this retrospective observational study is to investigate the long-term changes in cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) as a measure of cerebral hemodynamics in patients with intracranial steno-occlusive disease (IC-SOD) after they have undergone an Extracranial–intracranial (EC-IC) bypass. ...

Dangers of outpatient nimodipine use after spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage in accordance with the Comprehensive Stroke Center guidelines
This report underscores the danger of outpatient nimodipine use and questions the optimal length of nimodipine therapy, especially in patients with low risk of vasospasm. Future studies, including randomized controlled trials and cost-effectiveness studies, are necessary to clarify the benefit of 21-day nimodipine therapy compared to a shortened duration of nimodipine.
