Postural control and gait changes in subacute stroke patients after receiving interdisciplinary rehabilitation and related factors: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Interdisciplinary rehabilitation promotes moderate and clinically relevant changes in postural control and gait recovery in subacute stroke patients, after two-month rehabilitation period. Ambulatory rehabilitation, dyslipidemia absence and psychotropic medication absence were associated with patients' evolution, but further research is required to confirm their actual influence in larger samples.PMID:34826331 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7311.2021347

Knowledge of vascular status for therapeutic decision-making in acute ischemic stroke: which is the role of neurosonology?.
Abstract In the last years there is an increasing interest in the knowledge of vascular status in patients with acute stroke. Detection and localization of an artery occlusion is of great interest for an accurate prognosis and the selection of the most appropriate recanalizing therapy. Neurosonology is a useful diagnostic tool for vascular status study in patients with acute stroke. Different situations where ultrasounds offer a valuable diagnostic information are reviewed, such as middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, 'T' internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion, 'tandem' ICA-MCA occlusion, monitoring of intra-c...

Detection of vascular risk factors and unknown atrial fibrillation in patients hospitalised in the stroke unit.
CONCLUSIONS. Over half the subjects who suffer a cerebrovascular event have a risk factor that has not previously been diagnosed. Campaigns should be carried out to implement detection of these factors, and increased efforts must be made to lower the appearance and recurrence of vascular pathologies. Hand fine motor skills and use of both hand and arm in subjects after a stroke: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: In every case both validity and reliability have been reported, but clinical utility has been less considered for assessment. The studies that researched these tools showed a high risk of bias in their development. ARAT-19 showed a lower bias risk, but when it has to do with applicability and the reference trial is taken into account, the level of concern is high. PMID: 28345733 [PubMed - in process]

Cryptogenic stroke in a young patient with heart disease and kidney failure.
CONCLUSIONS: Fabry's disease must be suspected in young males with heart disease, stroke or peripheral neuropathy, skin lesions, kidney failure and a history of cases in the family. Hormone replacement therapy must be established at an early stage, as it can improve the prognosis. PMID: 28497441 [PubMed - in process]

Commercial video games in the rehabilitation of patients with sub-acute stroke: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: An interdisciplinary rehabilitation approach supplemented with semi-immersive virtual reality seems to be useful for improving balance and postural control, functional independence in basic activities of daily living, quality of life, as well as motivation and self-esteem, with excellent adherence. This intervention modality could be adopted as a therapeutic tool in neurological rehabilitation of stroke patients in subacute stage. PMID: 28990643 [PubMed - in process]

Motor imagery: a systematic review of its effectiveness in the rehabilitation of the upper limb following a stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Motor imagery, combined with conventional therapy (physiotherapy or occupational therapy), seems to have positive effects on the motor rehabilitation of the upper limb following a stroke. Further research is needed to improve the heterogeneity of the interventions and to evaluate their effectiveness in the long term. PMID: 29480509 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of policosanol in the functional recovery of non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke hypertensive patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The treatment for six months with policosanol + aspirin in hypertensive patients who had suffered a non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke proved to be more effective than the placebo + aspirin treatment in the functional recovery of these patients. PMID: 30350844 [PubMed - in process]

Validity of the Wisconsin Gait Scale to predict the risk of falls in stroke patients
CONCLUSIONS: The WGS scale is a valid instrument to predict the risk of falls in patients with a criterion in relation to the cut-off points established in the BBS.PMID:34254660 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7302.2020281
