Disability after stroke: a longitudinal study in moderate and severe stroke patients included in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke consequences are multidimensional. The symptoms that the stroke can cause in multiple domains, as well as the pattern of recovery are widely diverse, with prevalence of behavioral long-term disturbances. PMID: 28444680 [PubMed - in process]

Presumed perinatal ischemic stroke: risk factors and clinical and radiological findings.
CONCLUSIONS: Investigation in risk factors implicated in presumed perinatal ischemic stroke is required to develop prevention strategies. Delay in diagnosis is higher in periventricular venous infarction group. PMID: 28608354 [PubMed - in process]

A systematic review of the characteristics and prognosis of subjects who suffer an embolic stroke of undetermined source.
CONCLUSION: The application of the new ESUS criteria provides a better definition of patients with cryptogenic stroke. Applying the concept of ESUS requires not only adequate electrocardiogram monitoring, but also routine complementary examinations to rule out the presence of minor sources of cardioembolism and other sources of embolism other than atrial fibrillation. Prognostic factors of functional recovery from a stroke at one year.
CONCLUSION: At one year of having suffered a stroke, most of the patients recover the capacity for independent gait and to a lesser extent independence in activities of daily living. PMID: 28074998 [PubMed - in process]

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and its relationship with ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between OSAS and ischaemic stroke is evident. The advance in the identification of molecular markers and low-cost studies for the identification of OSAS will allow implementing strategies to reduce their consequences in cardiovascular diseases, mainly in ischaemic stroke. PMID: 31497870 [PubMed - in process]

Is necessary to perform a transthoracic echocardiogram in all the patients with cryptogenic stroke during hospitalization?.
CONCLUSIONS. The application of our criteria in undetermined stroke patients help us to identify with high efficiency cardioembolic sources postponing the test to an ambulatory scenario in the rest of the patients. PMID: 23658033 [PubMed - in process]

Metabolomics in ischaemic stroke, new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.
Abstract The study of biomarkers related with ischaemic stroke is becoming increasingly more important as a way to further our knowledge of the pathophysiological changes that occur in cerebrovascular disease and to make it easier to reach an early diagnosis. Within this field, metabolomics offers a novel approach. The field is defined as the study of the small-molecule metabolites derived from cell metabolism. Its interest lies in the fact that, using a biological sample, it offers a snapshot of the cellular changes that are taking place. Today, the application of metabolomics requires a complex methodology that ...

High performance of an implantable Holter monitor in the detection of concealed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with cryptogenic stroke and a suspected embolic mechanism.
CONCLUSIONS. In our patients with probably embolic cryptogenic ischemic stroke, PAF was detected by Reveal XT ILR in 33.7%. One in four events occurred after the first six months of monitoring. PMID: 24008935 [PubMed - in process]

Identification of the factors conditioning times and indicators of quality in the intrahospital care of acute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the current situation of the times and quality indicators and their determinants are essential to provide the motivation to start an initiative to improve the quality of care in patients with acute stroke. PMID: 26860720 [PubMed - in process]

Long-term effect of policosanol on the functional recovery of non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke patients: a one year study.
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term (12 months) administration of policosanol + aspirin given after suffering non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke was shown to be better than placebo + aspirin in improving functional outcomes when used among patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke of moderate severity. PMID: 28169410 [PubMed - in process]

Efficacy of interventions with video games consoles in stroke patients: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of video games consoles is a useful complement for the conventional rehabilitation of the upper extremities of persons who have survived a stroke, since it increases rehabilitation time and enhances the recovery of motor functioning. Nevertheless, homogeneous intervention protocols need to be implemented in order to standardise the intervention. PMID: 29323401 [PubMed - in process]

Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy. A rare cause of ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS. APMPPE is an infrequent condition that generally has a good prognosis. In some cases, however, complications may arise owing to involvement of the central nervous system, and ischaemic stroke secondary to vasculitis is the most severe complication. In young patients with stroke who present visual symptoms and chorioretinital lesions, APMPPE must be considered in the aetiological diagnosis. PMID: 23703059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of combined aerobic and resistance training on cognition following stroke: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS. Physical activity constitutes a promising strategy to improve cognitive function following stroke. Larger clinical trials and homogeneity in both exercise protocols and cognitive assessment instruments are needed. PMID: 24288102 [PubMed - in process]
