Association of total cholesterol and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with follicular thyroid cancer: A real-world study from Chinese populations
The association between serum total cholesterol (TC) level and incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with follicular thyroid cancer postthyroidectomy is unknown. This was a retrospective study and patients (n = 384) were divided into low and high TC groups according to the median TC level. Incidence of composite ASCVD (myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death) was compared between these 2 groups and factors contributing to the association of TC and ASCVD were evaluated. Patients in the high TC group were older and more likely to have diabetes and have higher C...

Vertebral artery hypoplasia as an independent risk factor of posterior circulation atherosclerosis and ischemic stroke
Vertebral artery hypoplasia (VAH) is a frequent anatomical variation of vertebral arteries, with emerging evidence suggesting that it contributes to posterior circulation ischemia. However, the relationship between VAH and ischemic stroke remains unknown. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of VAH in patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke who were followed up in a neurology clinic and to determine if it can potentially be a risk factor for atherosclerotic stenosis in vertebrobasilar circulation. This retrospective study included 609 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke between January 1, ...

Predictors of hemorrhagic complications after intravenous thrombolysis in acute cerebral infarction patients: A single-center study of 391 cases
This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of hemorrhagic complications after intravenous thrombolysis using Urokinase in acute cerebral infarction (ACI) patients. Total 391 consecutive ACI patients were enrolled and divided into 2 groups: the hemorrhagic complications group and the non-hemorrhagic complications group. The related data were collected and analyzed. Univariate analysis showed significant differences in prothrombin time, atrial fibrillation (AF), Mean platelet volume, large platelet ratio (L-PLR), triglyceride (TG), Lactate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), high-density lipoprotein, and b...

Prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width in predicting 3-month functional outcome of patients undergoing thrombolysis treatment for acute ischemic stroke
This study was performed to determine whether red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with 3-month poor functional outcome in patients undergoing thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke. RDW was measured in patients with thrombolytic therapy in emergency department. Functional outcome was assessed after 3 months and poor functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin scale 3 to 6. A total of 240 patients were enrolled, and 82 (34.2%) had a poor functional outcome. The median RDW was significantly elevated in patients with a poor functional outcome compare with those with a good outcome. RDW ...

Exploring community-dwelling stroke survivors’ experiences of receiving a nurse-led theory-based stroke self-management programme: A qualitative study
This study concurred that the SSMP enhanced stroke survivors’ self-efficacy in self-management. Rearrangement of the programme format and enhancements in accessibility could be further examined to enable more effective stroke self-management.

An association between electronic nicotine delivery systems use and a history of stroke using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system
This study aims to assess, using a survey representative of the USA general population, if an association exists between a history of ENDS use and a history of stroke. This cross-sectional study was a secondary data analysis using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey. The main exposure variable of the study was a self-reported history of ENDS use. The main outcome was a self-reported history of stroke. Covariates included sex, race, traditional cigarette use, smokeless tobacco use, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, myocardial infarction, and coronary artery disease. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic...

A retrospective study on the preventive effect of statin after carotid artery stenting
This retrospective study appraised the preventive effect of statin after carotid artery stenting (CAS). Records were extracted for 100 patients with CAS surgery indicator, aged between 20 and 75 years old, and treated for statin. The cohort study included treatment group (statin and routine treatment) and control group (routine treatment), each group 50 patients. Outcomes consisted of degree of nerve defect (as measured by National Institute of Health Stroke Scale), lipid profiles (mg/dL), and CAS complications within 30 days after surgery. After treatment, there were no significant differences in National Instit...

The effects of additional electrical stimulation combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and motor imagery on upper extremity motor recovery in the subacute period after stroke: A preliminary study
Background: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of additional electrical stimulation (ES) combined with low frequency (LF)-repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and motor imagery (MI) training on upper extremity (UE) motor function following stroke. Methods: The participants with subacute stroke in the experimental group (n = 8) received LF rTMS + MI + active ES interventions, and those in control group (n = 9) received LF rTMS + MI + sham ES interventions. Interventions were performed 5 days a week for 2 weeks, for a total of 10 sessions. All participants were given the sam...

The clinical outcomes of mechanical thrombectomy for proximal M1 occlusion involving lenticulostriate perforators: Is it worse than distal M1 occlusion? Retrospective observational study
Although the success rate of recanalization in acute intracranial artery occlusion is high, there is a poor rate of improvement in functional clinical outcome. The purpose of this study was to assess the functional outcome of mechanical thrombectomy for proximal M1 occlusion involving lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs) compared with distal M1 occlusion-sparing the LSAs. A retrospective analysis was conducted in patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA) M1 occlusions who had a successful recanalization subsequent to mechanical thrombectomy. The recanalization results were estimated using the thrombolysis in cerebral infar...
