Electrical velocimetry has limited accuracy and precision and moderate trending ability compared with transthoracic echocardiography for cardiac output measurement during cesarean delivery: A prospective observational study
We aimed to evaluate the accuracy and interchangeability of stroke volume and cardiac output measured by electrical velocimetry and transthoracic echocardiography during cesarean delivery. We enrolled 20 parturients in this prospective observational study. We recorded the stroke volume and cardiac output using both methods and compared the values at seven specific time points. We analyzed the data using linear regression analysis for Pearson's correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman analysis to determine percentage errors. We conducted a trending ability analysis based on the four-quadrant plot with the concordance rate...

Value of plasma homocysteine to predict stroke, cardiovascular diseases, and new-onset hypertension: A retrospective cohort study
The influences of hyperhomocysteinemia on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), stroke and new-onset hypertension are unclear. The aim of the study is to explore the associations of homocysteine levels with stroke, CVDs, and new-onset hypertension in Chinese individuals. This retrospective cohort study included outpatients and inpatients from the Department of Geriatrics at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine from January to December 2000. They were divided based on their homocysteine (Hcy) levels in 2000: Q1 (15 μmol/L) and according to whether they had hypertension at baseline. Inf...

The efficacy of Qigong exercises for post-stroke mental disorders and sleep disorders: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Post-stroke mental disorders (PSMDs) and post-stroke sleep disorders (PSSDs) are quite common condition in stroke's patients. Qigong has been widely applied as a replaced and useful treatment for PSMDs and PSSDs. However, the exact effects and safety of Qigong have yet be systematically investigated. Our study focused on summary of efficacy and safety of Qigong for the treatment of advanced PSMDs and PSSDs through the systematic analysis and meta-analysis, in order to provide scientific reference for the clinical. Methods: The protocol followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analy...

The impact of dysphagia on quality of life in stroke patients
The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of life in stroke patients using a swallowing quality of life (SWAL-QOL) questionnaire. The correlation between SWAL-QOL questionnaire outcome and videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale (VDS) scores in stroke patients was also determined. This cross-sectional study was retrospectively conducted with 75 stroke patients with dysphagia symptoms. Videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and SWAL-QOL questionnaires were performed for all patients. These patients were divided into an oral feeding group and a tube feeding group. SWAL-QOL scores were compared between the 2 gr...

A novel nonsense mutation in TNNT2 in a Chinese pedigree with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A case report
Rationale: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited myocardial disease and a common cause of sudden cardiac death, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke. In families affected by HCM, genotyping is useful for identifying susceptible relatives. In the present study, we investigated the disease-causing mutations in a three-generation Chinese family with HCM using whole exome sequencing (WES). Patient concerns: The proband, a 50-year-old man, was diagnosed with HCM at the age of 41 years. He presented with an asymmetric hypertrophic interventricular septum and a maximum interventricular septum thickness o...

Adipose tissue derived stromal vascular fraction as an adjuvant therapy in stroke rehabilitation: Case reports
Introduction: Stroke often causes residual hemiparesis, and upper extremity motor impairment is usually more disabling than lower extremity in those who are suffering from post-stroke hemiparesis. Cell therapy is one of the promising therapies to reduce post-stroke disability. Patient concerns: Three male participants were included in the study to investigate the feasibility and tolerability of autologous adipose tissue derived stromal vascular fraction. Diagnosis: All participants had hemiparesis after 1st-ever stroke longer than 6 months previously. Interventions: Under general anesthesia, liposuction of abdom...

Bilateral pontine infarction with basilar artery fenestration: A case report
Rationale: Basilar artery (BA) fenestration is a congenital anomaly with duplicated BA, which can cause ischemic stroke. However, the stroke mechanism is not clearly verified in patients with BA fenestration. Patient concerns: Here, we report a case of 64-year-old man with well-controlled hypertension admitted with dysarthria, only. Diagnoses: Diffusion weighted image showed a bilateral symmetric pontine infarction sparing the midline. BA fenestration was observed from magnetic resonance angiography. Intervention: High-resolution magnetic resonance image (MRI) and 4D flow MRI was performed to verify the mechanis...

Association between periodontitis and bipolar disorder: A nationwide cohort study
Whether periodontitis is a risk factor for developing bipolar disorders (BD) has not been investigated. We aimed to determine whether periodontitis is associated with the subsequent development of BD and examine the risk factors for BD among patients with periodontitis. Using ambulatory and inpatient claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we identified 12,337 patients who were aged at least 20 years and newly diagnosed with periodontitis between 2000 and 2004. The date of the first claim with a periodontitis diagnosis was set as the index date. For each patient with periodontitis, 4 subj...

Prognostic value of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores for post-discharge outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
This study aimed to investigate the association of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores with CV outcomes in such patients. We included a total of 915 ACS patients undergoing PCI in this study. CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were calculated from data collected before discharge. The primary endpoint was defined as a composite of major adverse CV events (MACE) including overall death, nonfatal stroke, nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) and unplanned repeat revascularization. We assessed MACE's relationship to CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores using Cox proportional-hazard regression analyses. Mean follow-up duration was 918 days. M...

Microcatheter infusion of bolus-dose tirofiban for acute ischemic stroke due to distal intracranial artery occlusion
The utility of endovascular thrombectomy for acute occlusion of the distal intracranial artery (A2/A3/M2/M3/P2/P3) is unclear, and aspiration and stent thrombectomy are associated with risk of bleeding. We analyzed patients with acute occlusion of the distal intracranial artery to assess the safety and efficacy of microcatheter-based tirofiban infusion. We retrospectively reviewed data of the endovascular thrombectomy registry of our center between January 2018 and June 2019. Patients with distal intracranial artery occlusion who underwent endovascular thrombectomy with microcatheter-based infusion of tirofiban were recru...
