A retrospective observational study of functional outcomes, length of stay, and discharge disposition after an inpatient stroke rehabilitation program in Saudi Arabia
Abstract: Functional outcomes, length of stay (LOS), and discharge disposition have become frequent outcome measures among stroke patients after rehabilitation programs. To examine the trends of changes in functional outcomes, LOS, and discharge disposition in stroke patients discharged from an inpatient rehabilitation facility. All patients (n = 432) were admitted to a tertiary inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with stroke diagnoses from November 2008 to December 2014. The functional independence measure (FIM) instrument used to assess the patient's functional status. The LOS was measured as t...

Efficacy and safety of puerarin injection in curing acute ischemic stroke: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Background: Previous studies indicated that the puerarin injection has been widely employed in China for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the puerarin injection for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in PUBMED, EMBASE, SPRINGER LINK, Scopus, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Journals Database, Wanfang database and the China Biological Medicine database before November 2016, randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) of puerarin injection treating acute ischemic stroke were i...

Is carotid sonography a useful tool for predicting functional capabilities in ischemic stroke patients following carotid artery stenting?
Abstract: Carotid stenosis is a major cause of stroke and timely intervention with stenting manipulation can significantly reduce the risk of secondary stroke. The impact of stenting procedures on patient functional capabilities has not yet been explored. The primary aim of this study was to examine associations between periprocedural carotid sonography parameters and post-treatment functional capabilities in stroke patients. Sixty-seven patients who received carotid stenting at 1 angiography laboratory were included. Prestenting and poststenting carotid duplex data were recorded and resistance index (RI) differences at v...

Association of high waist-to-height ratio with functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke: A report from the ACROSS-China study
Abstract: The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between the waist-to-height ratio (WHR) and all-cause mortality and functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke in a prospective cohort study. A total of 2076 patients (36.66% females) with ischemic stroke were analyzed from ACROSS-China, which is a nationwide, prospective, hospital-based stroke registry aimed to detect the glucose abnormality in China. One-year follow-up evaluation was done by telephone interview. Outcome measures were all-cause mortality and functional outcome defined as modified Rankin score being 6 and from 0 to 6, respectively. We...

Efficacy and safety of desmoteplase in acute ischemic stroke patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: Intravenous desmoteplase is associated with a favorable reperfusion efficacy and acceptable safety in ischemic stroke treatment>3 hours after symptom onset. Well-designed randomized controlled trials with larger patient cohorts and a moderate dose of drugs are needed to further evaluate the true efficacy of desmoteplase in stroke patients. Dissection extending from extra- to intracranial arteries: A case report of progressive ischemic stroke
We reported a rare case of 33-year-old patient with progressive ischemic stroke due to dissection from an intimal tear in the right proximal internal carotid artery to distal middle cerebral artery. Diagnoses: 3D fat-saturated T1 VISTA imaging, owing to its comprehensive neck and head coverage, high spatial resolution, enables the reader to have several sections with good contrast covering the dissected arterial segment, even in the rare dissection involving extra- and intra-cranial arteries referred in this article. Interventions: Clopidogrel 75mg daily was prescribed, also the patient was given rehabilitation training....

Low free triiodothyronine levels predict symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and worse short-term outcome of thrombolysis in patients with acute ischemia stroke
Abstract The aim of the study was to determine whether thyroid hormones level on admission in patients with ischemic stroke, treated with intravenous recombinant tissue type plasminogen activator (rtPA), was associated with symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) and worse outcomes at 3 months. Patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) receiving intravenous rtPA thrombolytic treatment on our stroke unit between January 2015 and June 2016 were included in this study. Serum-free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), total triiodothyronine (tT3), total thyroxine (tT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were ...

Associations of common variants at ALDH2 gene and the risk of stroke in patients with coronary artery diseases undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
Limited data are available about the role of common variants at the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 gene (ALDH2) on the clinical outcome in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In the present study, a total of 1089 patients were consecutively enrolled from January 2012 and July 2013. Six common variants at ALDH2 gene, including rs2339840, rs4648328, rs4767939, rs11066028, rs16941669, and rs671, were selected to test the associations of those polymorphisms with the cardiovascular outcome in patients with CHD after PCI. The clinical endpoints included cardiovascular...

Mobile phone application for self-assessment of acute stroke patients: A tool for extended care and follow-up
We aimed to assess the accuracy of self-assessment for acute stroke patients via mobile phone application-based scales and determine the value and prospect of clinical use. A cross-sectional study was designed and acute stroke patients were enrolled. We pushed the modified Rankin scale (mRS) and activities of daily living (ADL) scale to patients via mobile phone application for self-assessment on the day before they were out of hospital. We compared the results from nurse assessment and self-assessment. Around 50 patients with the average age 51.72 ± 12.40 completed the self-assessment. A total of 27 patients self-a...

Relationship between short telomere length and stroke: A meta-analysis
Background: Several epidemiological studies had been carried out in different population cohorts to estimate the relationship between the shortened telomere length and stroke. However, the results still remained dispute. Consequently, we conducted this meta-analysis to estimate the relationship between them. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were systematically searched for related articles to evaluate the association between “stroke” and “telomere length. STATA 12.0 software was used to perform the meta-analysis. The Cochran Q test and inconsistency index (I2) were used to assess the heterogeneity. Be...

Relationship between the anxiety/depression and care burden of the major caregiver of stroke patients
This study used a cross-sectional survey design and convenience sampling. Totally, 117 caregivers of stroke patients were enrolled. Data were collected from questionnaires. Hamilton anxiety scale, Hamilton depression scale, and Zarit caregiver burden interview were performed. Multiple linear regression and correlation analysis were used. The anxiety score, depression score and total burden score of 117 stroke caregivers were 16.56 ± 8.02, 18.63 ± 9.39, and 25.88 ± 10.35, respectively. Anxiety symptoms, mild to moderate depressive symptoms, and severe depressive symptoms were found in 43.9%, 26.5%, and 27.4...
