Warfarin treatment and risk of stroke among primary care patients with atrial fibrillation.
Conclusions Warfarin is effective in preventing stroke in AF patients in primary health care. PMID: 27460750 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Echocardiographic measures of atrial function may predict atrial fibrillation in stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: LAVI and measures of atrial contraction as measured by TDI predict unknown AF in patients after an stroke/TIA and may be used to detect silent AF. PMID: 27192631 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aspirin plus Clopidogrel versus Aspirin Mono-Therapy for Ischemic Stroke: A Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The addition of clopidogrel to aspirin for patients with TIA or IS appeared to significantly reduce the risk of IS recurrence with a possible increase in the risk of bleeding compared with aspirin alone. PMID: 31112048 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Right-side propensity of cardiogenic emboli in acute ischemic stroke with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the existence of a right-side propensity of cardiogenic emboli and the larger infarct volume of right-side MCA/ACA stroke in patients with AF. These results can be attributed to anatomical differences between the innominate and the left common carotid artery. PMID: 25375813 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Outcome of patients receiving a continuous flow left ventricular assist device - a retrospective single center study.
Conclusions. Survival rates were good, although one third of patients were bridged with temporary circulatory support. We report a high level of freedom from pump thrombosis, fatal stroke, and driveline infection. PMID: 32292078 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: A network meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This study adds an attempt for treatment ranking of both efficacy and safety outcomes. Future trials comparing directly NOACs are needed in order to provide conclusive proofs for these results and not only circumstantial evidence offered by a network meta-analysis. PMID: 30896311 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Poor Long-term Outcomes after Carotid Endarterectomy: A Retrospective Analysis of Two Portuguese Centers.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients continue to have high rates of AMI, MACE and death after CEA. Prior CAD is a risk factor for future AMI, whereas CKD is a significant predictor of MACE and death. Aggressive best medical treatment (BMT) and risk factors modification should be advised in patients with systemic atherosclerosis. PMID: 31251084 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Total aortic arch replacement using the thoraflex hybrid prosthesis: early- and medium-term results from a Scandinavian center
CONCLUSIONS: The Thoraflex hybrid prosthesis can be used in the setting of total aortic arch replacement with good early- and medium-term results. Stroke and spinal cord complications remain an important source of early mortality.PMID:34463180 | DOI:10.1080/14017431.2021.1970800

Cost-effectiveness of screening for atrial fibrillation in a single primary care center at a 3-year follow-up
CONCLUSION: Screening for AF among 70-74-year olds in primary care using intermittent ECG appears to be cost-effective at 3-year follow-up with high anticoagulants adherence and no increased mortality.PMID:35389311 | DOI:10.1080/14017431.2022.2060523

Gender differences and bleeding complications after PCI on first and second generation DES.
CONCLUSION: Despite higher risk profile, women treated with DES have similar outcomes as males in 1-year follow-up. However there is, an increased risk of in-hospital bleedings in women. PMID: 27471987 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

New onset postoperative atrial fibrillation and early anticoagulation after cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: POAF after cardiac surgery was associated with high risk of MACE. Early anticoagulation may be justified in POAF patients to secure a long-term outcome after cardiac surgery. PMID: 28990803 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between heart rate variability and haemodynamic response to exercise in chronic heart failure.
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate strength of the relationship between measures of HRV and cardiac response to exercise suggests that cardiac autonomic function is not good indicator of overall function and pumping capability of the heart in chronic heart failure. Hybrid type II and frozen elephant trunk in acute Stanford type A aortic dissections
Conclusion. Hybrid II should be considered in favour of FET technique in acute Stanford type A dissection patients who are at higher risk due to age and comorbidities.PMID:35546567 | DOI:10.1080/14017431.2022.2074095
