Association of beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 with stroke risk in the general Chinese population
CONCLUSION: Elevated serum B2M, cystatin C and LCN-2 levels are associated with stroke risk. They may be novel biomarkers for clinicians to assess stroke risk.Key messagesSerum beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 levels are significantly associated with stroke risk.Beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 may serve as useful biomarkers for stroke risk stratification in the general population.PMID:37155257 | PMC:PMC10167872 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2203516

24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and cryptogenic ischemic stroke in young adults
CONCLUSIONS: Non-dipping patterns of BP were associated with CIS in the absence of a PFO but not in the absence of hypertension. This may reflect differing pathophysiology underlying CIS in patients with versus without a PFO. Due to limitations of the study, results regarding absolute ABP levels should be interpreted with caution.Key MessagesNocturnal non-dipping patterns of blood pressure were associated with cryptogenic ischemic stroke except in participants with a patent foramen ovale and in those without hypertension by any definition, which may indicate differing pathophysiology underlying cryptogenic ischemic stroke ...

Outcome of transcatheter atrial septal defect closure in a nationwide cohort
CONCLUSION: After TC closure of ASD, patients had a higher risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation and migraine than controls without ASD. As novel findings, we found an increased risk for ischemic heart disease, AV conduction disorders, and ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia.Key messagesEven though patients have an excellent overall prognosis after percutaneous ASD closure, the increased incidence of major comorbidities like atrial fibrillation and heart failure prompts more thorough lifelong follow-up.This study's novel findings revealed the increased risk for ischemic heart disease, AV conduction disorders, or ventricul...

Self-reported efficacy in patient-physician interaction in relation to anxiety, patient activation, and health-related quality of life among stroke survivors
CONCLUSIONS: Higher self-efficacy in patient-physician interaction was associated with higher patient activation and mental health status among stroke survivors using smartwatches. Furthermore, we found no association between anxiety and smartwatch prescription for AF in participants with high self-efficacy in patient-physician interaction. Efforts to improve self-efficacy in patient-physician interaction may improve patient activation and self-rated health and subsequently may lead to better clinical outcomes.KEY MESSAGESHigher self-efficacy in patient-physician interaction was associated with higher patient activation an...

Trajectories of arm recovery early after stroke: an exploratory study using latent class growth analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We found unique patterns of arm recovery with distinct characteristics for each cluster. Better understanding of patterns of arm recovery can guide future models and intervention development.KEY MESSAGESArm recovery early after stroke follows four distinct trajectories that relate to time post stroke, initial stroke severity and baseline level of motor arm function.Identification of recovery patterns gives insight into the uniqueness of individual's recovery. This study offers a novel approach on which to build and develop future models of arm recovery.PMID:36594373 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2159062

Clinical profile and risk factors of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in Sudan: A multicenter cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis is mainly a disease of child-bearing women, although significant proportions of men were affected. Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis presents in a wide variety of signs and symptoms.PMID:36536723 | PMC:PMC9758368 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.104891

Dysphagia and associated factors among patients with acute ischemic stroke in Vietnam
CONCLUSION: Our study showed that the prevalence of dysphagia is high among patients with acute ischemic stroke in Vietnam. Intervention solutions should focus more on patient groups of higher age group, brainstem stroke, communication disorder and facial paralysis.PMID:36536715 | PMC:PMC9758358 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.104887
