Infusing Sociology into a Physiology Classroom: Teaching the Physiology of Obesity Through a Socioscientific Lens
Adv Physiol Educ. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1152/advan.00093.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConventional teaching about obesity, especially within a physiology-based course, tends to focus on the biological aspects. Unfortunately, framing obesity from a solely biological perspective ignores many factors that contribute to the condition, leaving students with an overly simplistic idea. We developed an introductory exercise physiology course that was co-taught with a physiologist and sociologist to provide health science majors with a more holistic view of complex socioscientific issues including obesity. From our course stu...

Effectiveness and utility of flowcharts on learning in a classroom setting: A mixed methods study
CONCLUSION: Flowcharts provide an alternative approach to teaching complex content, which allows students to organize and summarize information that promotes meaningful learning. The ease of implementation combined with the generalized nature of flowcharts makes it an effective graphical organizer that can be used across various disciplines.PMID:37717694 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.100591

Peer Instruction as an Alternative Active Learning Pedagogy Across the Pharmacy Curriculum
CONCLUSION: The use of PI fostered improvement in the percentage of correct responses to ConcepTests focused on pharmacotherapy concepts throughout the first 3 years of didactic education. This pedagogy may be an effective and useful active learning strategy in pharmacy education that does not require significant classroom infrastructure changes.PMID:37597914 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.100090

An overview of Instructional approaches and decision-making strategies to curtail curricular overload
Am J Pharm Educ. 2023 Aug;87(8):100013. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpe.2022.12.001. Epub 2023 Mar 15.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVES: Curriculum overload often occurs when content is kept in the curriculum that may no longer be necessary to prepare students for professional practice. The overload becomes compounded by the addition of new content from the ever-changing professional practice needs and updates to accreditation standards. Challenges may occur when programs must first determine the "level" of proficiency a new graduate should attain and then determine the appropriate breadth and depth of educational outcomes in relation to proficiency...

Reducing Student Workload Through Curricular Efficiency
Am J Pharm Educ. 2023 Aug;87(8):100015. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpe.2022.12.002. Epub 2023 Mar 15.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: This integrative review will examine the current literature assessing student workload, outcomes of increased workload and cognitive load, and approaches to evaluate and reduce student workload. Recommendations to better inform curriculum planning efforts will be presented along with a call to action to address the dilemma of student workload and curricular efficiency efforts.FINDINGS: Literature supports that perceptions of heavy workload can influence students' approach to learning and lead to the adoption of surf...
