Advanced Research Institute (ARI): Supporting the Geriatric Mental Health Research Pipeline
Ongoing development of independent investigators is vital to translational clinical science, yet maintaining this pipeline is challenging1. One key bottleneck is the transition of early-career faculty to scientific leaders with independent research funding. In 2005, the National Academy of Science alerted the nation that the average age of first-time recipients of an NIH research grant had risen to 42 years. Despite efforts to change this trajectory, the data had not budged by 20102, and had even climbed to 44 years by 20203.

The impact of anti-seizure medications on psychiatric disorders among children with epilepsy: Both a challenge and an opportunity?
J Can Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2023 Aug;32(3):177-184. Epub 2023 Aug 1.ABSTRACTPsychiatric disorders are common co-existing conditions in children with epilepsy and can precede or follow epilepsy onset. Therefore, when selecting anti-seizure medications (ASMs) for children with epilepsy, in addition to seizure control, careful consideration of behavioral and psychotropic effects (BPEs) is critical, as they can have a negative impact on ASM adherence and quality of life. The goal in supporting children with epilepsy is an individualized approach to maximize seizure control and minimize negative BPEs. A previous histor...
