The need for consistency and equity in driver education and assessment post-stroke
Publication date: June 2014 Source:Journal of Transport & Health, Volume 1, Issue 2 Author(s): Annabel McNamara , Annie McCluskey , Jennifer White , Stacey George People who are unable to resume driving after a stroke often experience reduced participation. Return to driving is made difficult by inconsistencies in knowledge regarding legislation, the occupational therapy driving assessment process and access to services. As a result, inequities exist between and within states and territories of Australia. Some drivers miss out on, or bypass formal assessment, while other drivers experience rigorous assessment whi...

Effectiveness of interventions to improve occupational performance of people with cognitive impairments after stroke: an evidence-based review.
Abstract This evidence-based review was conducted to determine which interventions are effective in improving occupational performance after stroke. Forty-six articles met the inclusion criteria and were examined. Interventions for the following impairments were reviewed: general cognitive deficits, executive dysfunction, apraxia, memory loss, attention deficits, visual field deficits (included because of their close relationship with neglect), and unilateral neglect. Evidence is available from a variety of clinical trials to guide interventions regarding general cognition, apraxia, and neglect. The evidence regar...

Interventions for Caregivers of People Who Have Had a Stroke: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Addressing caregiver needs with problem-solving and caregiver support in addition to typical education and training is essential. More research is needed that uses consistent doses, interventions, treatment settings, and outcomes. What This Article Adds: Although more research is needed, occupational therapy practitioners should provide combinations of interventions such as problem-solving techniques, customized support for each caregiver, and individualized education in the care of the stroke survivor.PMID:36795373 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050012

Effectiveness of occupation-based interventions to improve areas of occupation and social participation after stroke: an evidence-based review.
Abstract This evidence-based review examined the evidence supporting the use of occupation-based interventions to improve areas of occupation and social participation poststroke. A total of 39 studies met the inclusion criteria and were critically evaluated. Most of the literature targeted activity of daily living (ADL)-based interventions and collectively provided strong evidence for the use of occupation-based interventions to improve ADL performance. The evidence related to instrumental ADLs was much more disparate, with limited evidence to support the use of virtual reality interventions and emerging evidence ...
